I wanted to ask all the people who have removed the hood seals to get out heat from the engine bay. Does it greatly reduce engine temp? What about rain or when washing you'r car, does a lot of water get in there? Overall are you happy you did it? With it being summer now it's starting to get really hot and I feel bad for my Supra to be driven in such hot weather.

What about putting a washer or something on the hood strut bolt to give it a little bit of a lift? Would that work? That way you wouldn't remove the seals and could return it to it's normal position later.

I've had my weatherstripping @ the firewall out for a few yrs now w/no problems. You can see the heat escaping at night as well, so it does work. The only thing I can think of that it'd be a bad idea is at higher speeds. It's may act like a cowl induction hood. Once in a while at highway speeds and fairly windy I can see my hood flexing/shaking a bit. Nothing like it's gonna fly off or anything, but it's noticeable. I honestly can't remember if it did that before I took it out or not. Rain.. not a problem.

Many people have done this (but I haven't paid any attention to any problems with it).

Lumpy is correct - at speed this will act as a cowl induction (higher pressure at the base of the windshield will push air into the engine (rather than letting it out).

Well this seems to be an overall good idea, but Im also gonna jack this a little n ask, the fiberglass that covers the underside of my hood isnt in the best shape, along with the weatherstrippin can I remove this safely and everything still be alright?

I just removed my seal on the firewall off right now. I had no idea it would come off so easily. I though it was seald on but mine was just attached to these plasic clips.

You probably have a 1987 supra. They were made real cheap. The 88's and later were sealed way better.

If you have an 86.5 then you're lucky it's still running. Most of them have rusted out from under their previous owners by now.

Come on guys, you know you can't believe me. I'm just teasing. I took my seal out and it does exactly like Lumpy saids. It looks like it's made of paper while going down the road at high speeds. I'm just assuming it's letting some of the heat out though.

sure removing the seal and using washers works, but it allows stinky engine bay smell into the car via the HVAC system....not worth it if you travel w/a female.

Now thats the best post i have on SM in while :)

I have mine removed too, and yes my hood shakes at highway speeds, it also sucks in hot engine bay air when using the a/c or vents, scince the air intake is right on the other side of the weather seal. Another option is to just cut the sides off the seal and leave the middle on where the vent air intake is, which keep most of the engine bay air out of the vent system.

I have recently done both . I used the old washers from the stock head bolts ( two for the front bolt and three for the rear) I also moved my front plate to the right just above my fog light . She is running about 8 to 10 degrees cooler and I took her up to 125mph last night and not a problem I am sorta thinking about making a leash for it just in case. My friend Marc has a 90 Skyline GTR with a really nice cf hood that shakes a little and we got it up to 260km this weekend and that hood stuck around . So I am assuming that a heavy hood would be no problem.
