Hello my fellow supra brothers, it's been a month since i had my supra.

Time for a oil change!

quick question my 7mgte has 214,xxx miles on it runs great on 10w-30 oil.

i want to change it to 10w-40, but im scared the synthetic oil will cause leak in my engine. i Asked the last previous owner and he said he always used 10w-30 regular. is it too late for me to change?

thats why i turned to my fellow supras brothers for advice.

any comments and advice be much appreciated.

So you think synthetic will cause holes to form in the seals? How interesting.

All jokes aside, there was a time when the additive pack in the synthetic didn't like conventionals and seals, and it caused a problem. Or something like that. Don't worry about it now. You can probably find the info in the SME section.

Guys, there's a whole section on oil...I run it ;)
(search is your friend)

Mobil 1 is a Grp III oil...not a true synthetic. If you're going to run a Grp III, Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 is a much better choice. Castrol European Formula (aka German Castrol) 0W-30, Redline 5W-30, or Royal Purple 5W-30 are the only Grp IV & V synthetics readily available in a weight you want to use.

There is no reason to run a 10W-40 in a stock motor...use a 0W or 5W-30.

The only reason a syn oil would cause a leak is if it dissolves deposits on worn seals. Syn oils are quite good at this (cleaning deposits)...if that's the only thing keeping the seal from leaking, well, you get the idea.

That's your choice ;)
If you want to be 100% sure your seals don't leak from using a syn oil per my last post...what would be the obvious answer?

i would just stick with regular castrol gtx. unless you don't like to change your oil often there really isn't any reason for synthetic oil. unless the car was design to run on it from the fractory. the main difference between the two is that synthetic oils don't loose there additives as easy. they can withstand temps that the engine can't even withstand. that is how they can be ran for so many miles. where fossil based oil can only withsand xxx amount of degrees before it looses it's additives making it unable to lubricate properly. my teacher explained it to our class. if you change your oil regularly there isn't really any reason to us synthetic on older cars.

synthetic oils aren't as magical as they appear.

Indeed, that is the problem. I take an Automotive Technician class and they say pretty much the same stuff thats been repeated over and over again. Thats pretty much why I don't listen to them when it comes to oil or a few other things, like how I need a smaller exhaust from my turbo back to make more power(mine is a 3 inch), but thats a different story.

The last time I changed my oil in their shop I got scolded for using GC 0w-30 because it was too light, I was told that the oil "cant retain its structure while its being pumped through the engine" or some such, I just stopped listening. I just kept filling my engine with oil and then said "Oh I guess I made a mistake" and walked away laughing.

This reminds me, I've got about 5K on the Penzoil Plat in my DD, I guess it's about time to put on a new Purolator filter...

Well, it's made it to 214K on whatever was used. Seems that ought to count for something...

Maybe he should stick with what's working ;)
