I understand the Octane ratings and such on gasoline, but I have a question about what octane my car's manual recommends.
I'm fixing up a 1979 280zx and everything says this car has 8.3:1 comp, why does it say to use 91 octane or better? The shop manual says that the car should be set to 10 degrees BTDC. Could this advanced timing be the reason for the high octane recommendation?
I don't really want to use the more expensive gas if I can run on the cheap stuff. Supposed to be a fun car... So, think I could just run 87 (I live in CA) and adjust the timing accordingly? or is this something else entirely? (aka, not related to vacuum advance, etc)
Thank you for your advice.
