so it has become that time when i need a new motor, or most likely need one. i blew my headgasket road racing and possibly screwed something else up since i found alot of oil coming out of my pcv.

so what i'm thinking is:

Option1: get a gte with rodknock free from a friend, do a stock bottom end rebuild and possible head rebuild, w/ ard studs and a MHG and throw my rebuilt ct26 back on it and run it at 13psi like i was before. approximate cost is $1.5k


option2: do a 1uz swap out of a 98 1uz (300hp crank hp) pop it in and call it day. get exhaust done and thats about it. approximate cost is $2k



what i like: i dont need a crazy high horsepower car, i dont race the car other than road racing, so reliability is key. in both situations i would be reusing my w58 since i just bought a spec clutch for it. I just want a car that can keep its own with the newer sports cars of today. i was plenty happy with the 300rwhp i had before with the na-t. i'm not quite sure how much a newer gen 1uz will put out with an exhuast.


im curious to hear opinions and im open to other suggestions as well. i figured i wouldn't do a jz swap because i would be spending alot more on new IC setup, r154trans and clutch, dp and other random parts

I'd vote 1uz. Nothing like a 4.3 V8 for moving a heavy Supra.

1) It's something not everyone has done.
2) It's an extra 1.3l and 2 cylinders to get the car moving.

Although I haven't driven a 1uz Supra, my dad's 92 LS400 is nice and smooth and kind of reminds me of a larger Supra with a soft suspension. (33k original miles)

The only thing to worry about is classing. You mentioned road racing. Just check the rules before you lay out the cash.

I would go with the 7M-GTE. Doing the 1UZ will cost more to put in, and I think you would like to get this car on the road/road race track fast. If the 7M is built correctly they run a very long time. Like every engine, it all depends in how to treat it and what rigorous condition you put it through.

7M will have more potential I think down the road.

You've already got all the parts for a sweet 7m setup, and im sure you know a fair amount about the motor. Why switch?

Build it and make it better. Throw a sweet bottom end on there, and get a real good tune.

You know how much a new 7MGTE short block is I would just pay 600 for a low millage 1UZ and pop it in.

My brother haves a GS300 & SC400 and sold both his MKIII supras The SC400 runs super smooth he bought an aristo clip for 1800 and since he only payed ~1800 for both cars from the impound yards since the economy sucks the impound yards are full of repos and they are great cars the 1800 for the soarer clip + 800 for the sc300 is still way cheaper then 2900 for just a JZA70 clip

He is selling me his 1UZ and im even swapping mine into my 1998 4runner!
The swap is almost direct for the 4runner & the mkiii supra if you have automatic.

I know for my for runner you may have to lift the body maybe 1" to clear the steering shaft and you must use the front half of the A340 the bellhousing the torque converter flex plate of course and the pump with center shaft then you can keep 4X4 tranny.

Also you dont need to use the 4th selenoid from the 4runner (smooth shift lock one) 1UZ ecu the tranny signals the rest(3) will work fine.

Also if you want more HP you can swap in a paxton SC and get a good 4-500HP

rebuilt 7m sounds good.brain jus give me a heads up when your coming to pick up the motor. ohh and i also have a set of wiseco pistons .40 over jus laying around. if you kno wat i mean:naughty:

I voted 7M.. from the HP you CAN make and to swap is always more then what you think... no mater what...

You got the basic's just get some new goodies for the 7m if you are willing to go 2k on the 1u.. spend it on the 7m.. imho :}

wow...alot of misinformation in this thread.

1st - the 1UZ is 4 liter, the 3UZ is 4.3

2nd - The VVTi 1UZ would walk all over a moderately equipped 7M. However, the VVTi motor isn't the cheapest.

3rd - At 260hp/270tq the 96-97 1UZ is no slouch. Considering 200 lb/ft of that torque comes in 350 rpm above idle, and its nasty (if you can get it to hook). Even the 92-95 1UZ is pretty nice.

4th - the 1UZ (all eras) is a bulletproof motor, and there is documented proof that they can reach in excess of 600,000 miles. Yes, even with stock head gaskets.

In conclusion, I have heard nothing but good things about the 1UZ swap, and i'm currently in the middle of one myself. I have about 1400 tied up in it, and all that I really have left to get is the custom Y pipe made.

well thanks to turbo toyz i plan on doing a gte rebuild with his old motor. as much as i want 1uz i feel that once done i cant make much more power unless boosted which seems like a huge fitment issue unless u really start hacking away

The fact that you have asked rebulid or 1uz means you shouldn't even bother with 1uz.

To do a 1uz you have to be commited. You need many custom fabed parts which are costly, and not easy to get nor to get them to fit right.

I saw 2k somewhere up there.. you are nuts if you think that's all it's going to cost. try 5-8 when it's all said and done and you've been shafted by numorous shops for shotty work.

i am swapping a 1uz in my friends 1984 celica and i can attest to the nickle and dimeing. and the rebuild cost for a 1uz is high. we always refresh motors before we drop them in so re-ringing and resealing the 1uz is not cheap. the reason we do this is because motors out of a junkyard are hit and miss and i like to know what im putting in. case and point the motor we bought had a scuffed cylinder 700 dollars later the block is fixed.
