Hey Guys,

Got a quick question, hopefully someone here can give me some advice as I'm totally stumped and the IHI is a hard turbo to find info on.

I recently added to my supra collection (Had a mixture of mkii's, but all that remains is my 86 mkii 7m-gte swap) with a fairly well built mkiii from a list member here.

It has one of the older Greddy turbo kits on it, based upon the IHI RHC7. The turbo was recently rebuilt and balanced (before I bought it), very few hundred miles on it but leaks oil out into the hotside like a basket. Oil is leaking from around the main shaft, no cracks in the housing but so severely it fills the exhaust housing with oil just at idle.

The turbo has an oil inlet restricter and big unrestricted oil drain (AN 10) so it doesn't appear to be too much oil in the turbo center section. Has minimal play in the bearings, so it looks like a blown oil seal.

So I took the turbo to a reputable shop that does alot of turbo charger rebuilds in the local car community, he contacted IHI who apparently told that him Greddy bought the housings/center section from IHI but did modify them such that their standard rebuild kits wouldn't work. He doesn't want to continue if we can't get the proper parts.

I'm wondering if my oil leak is due to the turbo being rebuilt with an improper kit? It seems probable to me since the bearings are tight and the turbo has so few miles on it.

Does anyone know where I can get a 'proper' rebuild kit, if it differs from the standard RHC7 kit? I've emailed greddy usa with no response.

I have a GT40 on the way, but would like to see this turbo live again.

It would be shame to abandon it since its in such good condition (turbines/housings) and recently balanced.

Thanks for any and all advice!

What IHI has told you is a lie, although they have to, in order to protect Greddy's interests in the company.

Chances are its leaking due to a couple of reasons:

-Out of balance
-Impropper rear seal clearence
-Damaged rear seal area
-Too large oil feed line. Can be no larger than a -4
-Too small oil return line. Can be no smaller than a -10
-Crimped return line or pinched

If you'd like, send it to me and let me inspect it.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Car is 10,000 km's away right now, as I'm working in the middle east for the next few months but I could have a buddy send it off.

Its most likely one of the first three causes from the sounds of it. I really doubt its an oil issue as the feed line is a filtered 3 AN with an appropriate restrictor and the drain is atleast a 10 with no restrictions.

PM me your contact info and I'll price shipping it out.

Anyone interested in buying a freshly rebuilt IHI RHC7? :)

Thanks

Alf
