I'm in the same boat as you and just getting started on my first build. My block's on the stand now, and I pulled the pistons/rods late last night.

What's needed? Well, needless to say, I'm not far into it but so far a TSRM & Chilton's manual, an engine stand, ridge reamer (on loan from AZ), good socket set from 10 to 19mm, and a set of feeler gauges. Basically read through the TSRM ahead of time to get familiar with what to expect and make a list of any tools you might not already have. Chances are you will have 90% of them already.

Read through lots of other people's build thread so you pick up on important tricks and tips - best way to be sure you don't miss something important. From what I can see it's doable, but not necessarily easy - no short cuts for me.

Beyond that, a goodly amount of intestinal fortitude is a good thing to have, so you don't worry yourself to death about whether she'll run and live when it's all done. :)

Ridge reamer fits into the cylinder and takes the crusty ridge that builds up at the top of the cylinder with time. If you don't remove it, you won't get the piston out without destroying the rings and maybe (and far more importantly) the piston and/or scoring the cylinder wall. The one I used was a serious PITA to align perfectly parallel to the cylinder walls, but I eventually got it done.

depends on the machine shop. my machine shop actually took care of that for me but if you are wondering you can ask your machine shop and they will be able to tell you wether they will do it or not.

Me as well. I just had to take everything off the short block and just sent in the head and the block and they will do it all for me.
