Hi,

Just wondering what are you guy's thoughts about rebuilding a head. I have a blown 89 turbo head and was wondering if it would benifit me more to rebuild the head my self or buy a already rebuild head? Also if anyone can send me some directions on rebuilding a head or maybe some information where I can get some information on rebuilding supra heads. Thanks

eh man

you Cant rebuild the head yourself.

you cannot do a valve job, Resurfacing. etc

so Techincally you cant rebuild it yourself. a Machinest has to do tht stuff for you.

and hows a Head blow? Is it warped? Valves hit the piston and got bent? What?

if you arrange everything yourself, pay for it yourself, etc...then you can make sure that it is up to YOUR expectations.

buying a rebuilt one doesn't guarantee that

Take it in to get a valve job, and resurface. You can measure all the shims and replace them if necessary. For rebuilding the head yourself you can start with this link. http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM/em/EM_40.html
That pretty much tells you what you can do. Having all the tools necessary to do the job may limit you on what you can accomplish. You'd be better off having a good machine shop perform all the work instead of buying those specialty tools and materials.

Thanks for the information,

I am pretty sure my head is broken, because my valves are knocking when the car warms up, it's pretty loud. Also I not sure if I want to take this head in for a rebuilt because the head is old about 150k miles on it.

Another reason why I think my head is broken is because when I took off the head to replace my piston rings which melted onto my piston. I aligned the cam gear of the top head to the alignment mark and I believe the valves didn't line up correctly. I am not sure if it was normal or not and it’s been a while but I believe the intake valve side had four valves on two of the pistons that were open. Two of the intake valves for one of the piston were fully open and the other two were about half open. On the exhaust side, only two of the exhaust valves for one piston were open. (Don’t remember exactly which pistons they were)

What should the right alignment of the valves be if the cam gears are aligned with the timing belt alignment mark? What valves should be open and how many valves should be open at this point?

I not for sure what is wrong with the top head but I believe all my problems are coming from my head. I have lack of power when I quickly step on my gas pedal and the cars also dies when I quickly step on the gas pedal. If I slowly rev the car, the revs ok and doesn’t die. I check my codes and they are fine, I check my AFM, Turbo, and Throttle position sensor and they are fine.

I am thinking of buying a new rebuilt head off of Ebay for $425+ shipping. Does anyone have a good head I can buy for a cheap price?

Thanks

unless your valves are bent not sealing or not allined right your valves would not be the cause of any problems except failing and the noise is caused by someone running the valve system low on oil or reving it up to high of rpm's before it was warm. this can lead to failing later down the road but only if its realy bad other wise its just annoying.no one jump all over me on this but a very slight tick CAN be normal. im not saying it is normal but some engines have a very little kinda soft tick after so meny years and miles of going up and down.

nah

valves don't blow like that

you either have rod knock if it is pretty loud or you have misadjusted valves.

Yes, I am in madison, what can you recommend me? Thanks

Joe

For starters, I recommend you drive over to my place and find out what the problem really is before you tear the motor apart. :icon_bigg Seriously, I'll look it over with an expirienced eye.

The shop is Pfieffer's Race engines in Freeport, IL. They are going to be a bit of a drive for you, but they have done several heads for me (valves & surfacing) and I'd highly recommend them. He specializes in tractor pulling motors and has been an excellent source of info about modding the Supra as well. If your head is the problem, I can help you save a few $$$ by helping you disaasemble & re-assemble the head. I have the tools and a large valve shim collection at my house. :naughty:
