Hey guys, I need your help with what it should cost for an engine rebuild. I am not looking to over bore it or anything just a typical rebuild. I called a place today and they quoted me 2195 for a rebuild if I bring them the motor. To me that seems kinda high, seeing how I can get a remanufactured Topline motor from IPP for 1634 plus shipping. My aims arent too high for the supra, perhaps a 400 hp DD. From what I have read a stock block can handle 400 hp all day long with supporting mods for fuel and such.:1zhelp:

You need more than just that for a rebuild you have to check the condition of the cylinder walls see if you need to bore over or just hone. If you need to bore over you need oversized pistons, pins, rings machine work. Did you spin a rod bearing and have a knock, because if you did get the crank machined and straightened. Possible rod replacement or resized. Block and head decked for that o so precious mhg. A engine rebuild on you dont whant to take the cheap route and reuse any old parts or you will be doing it again. Me from experience dam that oil pump why did it have to look so new. 1000 miles later doing every thing again. Good thing gave me a chance to throw in some new things in the mix. Going holset turbo just like mdc but external waste gate ported head, clevite bearings, metal gasket, studs, fuel pump, maft pro, injetors and cleaning up the bay. One recomendation do it right or you will do it again.

yes of course. i'm just saying that you can spend $1100-1200 just on parts for a proper rebuild without even touching the engine for machine work. $1600 for a rebuild sounds very cheap to me, too cheap. in fact i would never take my engine anywhere to be built that didn't specialize in performance import engines.

ask them what type of headgasket and fasteners they recommend, and what the proper torque spec is. if they don't recommend a mhg with at least 75ft-lbs i would just walk away.

that seems somewhat high to me also. being from ohio i know what stuff cost around there. it sounds dumb, but 9 times outa 10 your best quality and cost comes from some lil run down hole in the ground shops that have some old guy doing the work. i know alota places like that back home where the guy does all there work from an old garage or something. some ppl might not agree with me but thats where i take my stuff! i will never go to large corp shops.

mine was $1600.. block was hot tanked, crank was cleaned and balanced, over sized pistons + rings, full balance & blue print, all new bearings, shaved the block, and put together into a short block. guy has been running the shop for like 20 years and has been racing cars for just as long.. LOTS of trophy's from big races. I felt confident in his work.

Geez... my engine guy had my block for about 2 months, felt bad because I called him everyday asking about it and he only charged me $400 to rebuild the head, hot tank everything, hone, prep the block and head, and put the short block together... (not including parts, obviously)

I figured up a rough guesstimate on my rebuild cost...

I think it was only $6-700 :icon_bigg All stock, and if/when it dies I'll hopefully have a built one ready to drop in.

CS: No they're very good bearings just don't have the Techie features I like in Clevites and I think it sucks them being substituted and NOT having the price adjusted!

I payed $80 for Clevite (NDC) mains and rods bearings for my rebuild and again for another rebuild since? Where are you guys getting $150???

Matt: is this rebuild guy a guy in a garage, or does he have a shop? Does he do the hot-tanking and such himself? Can he balance a rotating assembly?

Let's see - cost to rebuild, in my limited experience:

About double what you'd expect, or a few $K over you credit limit :biglaugh:
... whichever is higher !!
