I had a noise coming from the rear of the car. Thought it might be the ujoint. Parked it. Its been a week since I've been able to crawl under it because of rain. I crawled under it tonight when I got home from work. Turns out the plug in the rear end (non threaded) has blown out. What would cause this and can I get a new plug for it? I really need help on this one guys. I'm in a real bind with no car and having to pick the kids up. It sucks having to depend on someone to pick me up and get the kids. Please help me.

That's the fill hole and it should be threaded!
Well as you can see its not threaded. How and the crap would it just.. pop out? I havent touched the rear end at all. Can it be helicoiled and bolted? If not I'll have to rethread it and go to a larger size. Is that the best way to go? If so I'll jump on getting the parts tomarow including the rear end oil. What kind of oil does it take anyway?

Btw. Thanks for helping IJ. I really apreciate it. You have no idea how much.

I come from a land down under
More than likely someone in the past has stripped it and pushed a rubber plug in :(

A bunch of options come to mind

Get another Cover with good threads

buy a big tap and retap it to the next size up (An imperial threaded domestic plug may be an option)

Find another rubber plug (last resort)

You'll need some LS Gear oil the weight will depend on how cold it gets there!

If you cant get one from any of the auto parts stores near you toyota would chage you an arm and a leg for it, If you have any junk jards near you id suggest look there, and the read differential oil is SAE 90 gear oil i think

Yes, originally it was a threaded hole. I've read on here or other sites about plugs that were stuck so bad they ruined them coming out. That hole sure looks smooth at the thread area.

"I" would see about getting one of those universal neoprene (rubber) plugs that are used for expansion (freeze) plugs on the engine. You can find one that fits the hole, then tighten the nut down. It won't leak, as it compresses the rubber to fit very tight.

Carquest, Autozone, Napa, etc. should have one for $2.

As far as oil, your in a hurry, use any synthetic 75w-90 gear lube, with a little bottle of LSD additive (modifier).

LSD additive?? Can that be bought at...say...autozone?

Yep. Any parts house will have it. Many here say the Ford one works best, but I'd bet $$$$ that your clutch pack inside your diff is worn out anyway, and you don't have LSD any more.

Jack the car up on one side to get one back wheel off the ground. With the engine off, and the parking brake off, put the car in any gear but Park.

Now go see if you can spin the tire around one turn by hand. If you can, the LSD is shot. It's not gonna cause you trouble if it is wornout, because the diff will just operate like a regular one.

Use synthetic oil anyway, cause its the best, and will last for years.

Haha, expansion plugs. I never wouldve thought of that. I used to use those on the drain plugs on my boat. That should work very well. If it kept water out of the boat, then it should keep a thick oil in.

Cool thanks guys. Anyone have a diff cover they are willing to sell? LOL. There are NO places to get parts for these things around here. At all. None. I've looked and looked.
I did spin my tires while its up on jacks.. the diff is still good. I dont drive this car hard. Its my daily driver. So I go easy on her.
I guess for now I'll buy an epansion plug and fill it. Hopefully itll hold til I get another cover. If not. I will find a way to fix it until I do get one.
Thanks again everyone. Guess I know now to REALLY look a car over more before I buy it. You would not believe the crap rigging I found on this car. The more I look.. the more I find.
