Rear end gear ratio's

My understanding is that Toyota came out with different rear end gear ratio's. I have a 1989 7MGE, 5 speed transmission. When I'm on the highway going 65mph I'm clocking over 3000 RPM, going 75mph+ and my engine is really screaming 3500rpm plus, this is to much. My Lincoln Continental is lucky if it touches 2300rpm if I'm going 75mph and that Lincoln which weighs 800+ pounds more gets way better mileage and does not consume oil.

My Supra will pass oil if it is running above 3000rpm on a continual basis, couple hour trip on the interstate and you better check the oil later.

Does anyone know if the automatic transmission 7MGE rear ends have a higher gear in the back, or are they all the same? I pick over 8 different Supra's in the salvage yards this year, but never took anything off the rear end. If there is a difference there is a 86.5 with automatic & 7MGE which still has it's rear end in tact.

A little help if anyone is familiar with this, my email is paullehner@hotmail.com

Thanks

It is my understanding that all 7mGE cars had 4.3 rear ends.
The turbo cars from 87 and 88 had 3.91 and the 89+ turbo cars had 3.73 from the factory.
There is also a torsen differential that came on the TTR cars from Japan that have a 4.1 ratio.

Someone please correct me if this is bad information as this is the tech section.

My information agrees with that.

you can check the code ont he vehicle data tag. There will be a line that reads "A/T: " and then have the codes.

The axle (A) code will be Gxxy where xx is one of 28 = 4.300:1, 29=4.100:1, 30=3.727:1, 31=3.909:1 and y is 4=4 pinion open, and 5=4 pinion limited slip.

The transmission (T) code will be one of A340e, W58 or R154.

My '89 had the line A/T: G285/W58 and my '90T has G305/R154

Different engines. You probably have a v8 in your Lincoln continental. Lots of low end torque, so you can gear it down a lot. While the 7m is no slouch in terms of mid range torque, low end is pretty insignificant.

That being said I could get 27 mpg in my n/a with 3.91 gears

No, they are all the same. The only 3.91 7MGE was the Cressida. However, the A340E automatic has deeper overdrive. .70:1, compared to the W58 and its .78:1.

With an A340E trans at 70mph and stock tire diameter, you would be at 2843 rpm in O/D.
