What is a better transmission? I have both and have heard that the r154 is great and reliable and have heard that the w58 is very smooth and not very strong. Can anyone give me any input? I like my r154 but i also have never drove anything with a w58. thanks

this is a very well covered topic... you should do a little bit of searching on it... i started one of them asa matter of fact. i have two supras each has a different trans in it. they are really like night and day. what you have to ask youself is what are you going to do? am i going to leave my motor stock and just have a nice DD? or will i be making a high HP car to take to the track every once and a while? answer these questions and we will be able to help you out a little bit more. but like i said search it too. its an easily covered topic

keep the 154 and sell me the w58. i love the w58 and if you never drove one then just stick with the r154 its stronger and what not. But really Ill take that w58 off your hands.

The simple answer is the W58 is a better shifting smoother tranny for a factory model car it will hold if you dont abuse it a factory hp na car so i would say no more then 230hp like the mkiv.

The R154 is a must if you have more then 250hp and want something bullet proof to play with.

I was daily driving a w58 behind my 7mgte @ 289rwhp/ 295rwtq. It was holding just fine. drjonez blew one up with a super heavy foot at around 400rwhp. If you don't launch on it, the w58 is a great transmission. I wish the r series was as silky smooth. :(

Once you get up there in power, it's advisable to start looking for an r154.

the W58 will hold just as long as you don't launch hard(but what fun is that)The R154 will take a hell of a beating and is the better trans with out a dout.If you have both go with the better one.R154.

W56-B that was in the trucks is the same series as the W58 but with a steel center plate (like the R154).

Never available in our cars though.

Personally the W58 isn't that much smoother than the R154 IMHO, and about which tranny is "better" you be the judge from this diagram...

thanks for the info man but it does look as if the r154 has more moving parts? the r154 does have bigger gears and shafts though. the w58 look kinda chintzy.

^ Sell the w58, drop in the r154. You'll be better in the long run. :)

I really didnt want this tranny but i got it i shouldve been more specific but oh well. so now what im going to do is sell the w58 and buy a 1jz bell housing and maybe a new clutch plate. thanks
