Alright got my transmission out this morning at Toyota. Got the transmission home to my shop got it in the vice. Don't have any pics cause I came back to work to pick up some parts.
Gears all look good so I'm going on a limb and saying its the 1st gear thrust washer.

The symptoms: pulled up to a light stopped.. Tried to leave light and let off the clutch to have it pop out of 1st gear with a slight grind. Figured it wasnt fully engaged so held it in 1st let off agian and it grinded and does NOT want to stay in 1st. All other gears work just fine except 1st now.

So its apart and I still gotta pull the gears apart. Guess Im gonna head back to my shop now and fool with it some more!

well got it mostly apart. just a small update.
I need to get a long jaw gear puller for the bearing on the output shaft.
Someone ran off with my old one...

But in the first gear clutch fork one of the small 10mm bolts holding it to the shaft was about 1/4 out and somewhat bent??? Hmmmm??
Everything going smoothly so far

Bit of a tip if you have an old Slip yoke Weld it to some box tube with some flat as ears so you can clamp it in the vice this way you can slip the tranny into it and work on it vertically (A bit like Gyros meat) ;)

Hi Justin I just finished rebuilding my r154 with the kit from MDC he said that he has never had a problem with the teeth being smaller and he said he has sold alot of these kits I have yet to try the tranny out yet so Im putting my faith in the kit being a quality item.

True, I ordered a kit from a local shop real cheap with NSK bearings and some good stuff. They're well known for toyota transmissions for the 4wd's r151's but if the stock stuff can last 200k then im happy with it! I really don't want to do this agian and I even have new thrust washers!

But i have yet to see or hear bad about MDC or my local guys kits!

Justin: Probably done to give it more of a chance to engage under a forced shift, in the old days I'd dremel every 2nd point off each tooth to give the steel case 5 speeds I was using more of a chance of engaging.

Stock if you missed a shift at 400hp the trans would implode but with the syncro mod, good quality bearings and everything deburred it held up fine.
