R154 questions

I have noticed at times when I shift into first while I am stopped there is a noticeable thud that I can feel and if I try to shift directly into reverse most of the time it will grind as if I am not using the clutch unless I shift into gear then go into reverse. Are these normal for R154 transmissions? I also should mention that I have changed my tranny fluid recently to Redline MT-90. I also am looking around for short shifters that let me keep the stock height or something close to stock, I just don't want something that is like 3 inches tall.

Is it normal? No I don't think toyota designed the trans to grind going into reverse. There are tons of threads about this. Get some mt90 and do a search or two. Try second then reverse when going for reverse. Its just showing signs of age and could do with a rebuild.

Well I know it's not normal I meant is it a normal thing to happen with this transmission for their age. I have been thinking about rebuilding the tranny and wish I could have done that when I replaced my clutch but I didn't have the money for it at the time.

Have you checked you slave? It may be leaking, letting in air and not fully releasing. Happend to me, actually it happens to alot of people.

I changed my fluids within the year and fully bled the brakes and clutch and the levels are still where I topped them off.

Didn't mean to come off like an ass hah. Mine has 249k on it and it doesn't grind but I do like to go from 2nd to reverse. It is not unheard of though for them to show signs of aging at 160kish without proper maintenance.

Mine has about 86k on it but this is my first manual car; however, I have learned how to drive on my brother's prelude years ago and I am a quick learner but never grinded any gears.

Reverse is straight cut gears with no syncros. It will grind if just jammed into reverse. If you wait a couple seconds with clutch in and then go it won't grind.

If it clunking into first then something is worn.

Mine does the same thing into reverse...have to go 2nd to Reverse then there is no problem.

Does the thud into first happen when you are stopped? or are you still rolling slightly when it happens?

If I am coming to a stop sign or a red turns green and I go for first without completely stopping I get a slight thud sometimes...

Usually when I am stopped it happens like 6 times out of 10 maybe less but that might be because I don't notice it as much but it does also happen but when I am rolling a little bit it shifts like butter into first.
