so i just got done converting my auto to a manual this summer with a used r154. everything was working fine until yesterday when it started popping out of 1st as soon as you let the clutch out. 2nd gear works fine. from what ive started researching the r154 is notorious for the thrust washer and shifter fork breaking.

we tore the trans down yesterday at the shop and the shifter fork is not broken, and we havent gotten it torn apart to the thrust washer level yet.

can anyone link up some good threads on info about the r154's? so far I know marlin makes a better thrust washer than the oem, and i know there is a heated debate about weather or not the thrust washer fails because of a lack of lubrication, or simply fails because of a soft metal and higher horsepower demands.

just trying to read up on as much as i can about the 154's

I'm hoping its just the thrust washer. wont know until my "trans guy" has the time to finish tearing it apart for me. but in the meantime i am looking for some good reading material on what other things can be done to help this trans out while i have it torn apart. are there any more mods besides the billet shifter fork and upgraded thrust washer?

This trans breaking has been such a discouragement. I've owned this supra since 96' and i've just taken it out of storage this summer where its been stored for the last 7 years. In the past few months I've converted it to a 5speed, completely redone the fuel system, new rear suspension, new precision 6265 billet turbo, new custom made downpipe,AEM wideband, SP racing quick spool valve, clutchmasters stage 4, fidanza wheel, C's short throw, arp bolts, tons of misc. neglected things ive been fixing like new speedo cable, radiator hoses, power steering hoses, just everything thats needed to be done ive been doing. waited over a month for my turbo from precision and my divided housing from turbonetics. Finally get the car up and running drove it for a week, and then my rear brake line blew out last week. order a new line from toyota and replace that this week, then the very next day the trans broke on me! SUCKS! now the car is up in the air on a lift again with the trans out. WELCOME BACK SUPRA! LOL ....

You have a 20 year old car that hasn't been maintained in 7 years. Welcome back. ;)

Got a picture of the trans? Meaning the gears with the cover off. Quality picture.

yeah, welcome back is right. when it rains it pours. lol. its like the more i fix, the more other things break. just cant win.
I can get pics tomorrow. from initial inspection of the gears, there doesnt appear to be any major issues.

Well we had some time to dig a little deeper today and found the Broken Thrust washer. ordered the Marlin upgrade Today. Finish taking everything apart in the next few days of free time and figure out what else needs to be replaced while it's apart.

Shouldn't be to bad of a fix so far..........

I don't know what parts you have ordered already, but just thought you should know that Suprastore .com has an r154 rebuild kit for around the $500-600 mark. The kit is designed to address all the weak points of the stock r154.

All of us here on the forums can tell you that Marlin Crawler is the place for the R154. DriftMotion is the place of extremely good customer service. I have called Aaron on a Saturday and he picked up. Order your parts from there and if any of the parts you need are made by Marlin Crawler, you should get them. They are worth it but if you plan on getting groceries and a little weekend fun, then maybe stock Toyota parts is good enough for you. You should really get the Marlin Crawler parts though.
