Here is how to disassemble the R154. I only go up until the point of removing the gears from the case. You can spot simple problems this way.

First, you need to remove all of the bolts inside the bellhousing. Then remove the bellhousing from the trans. It should come off pretty easily. Remove the front plate behind the bellhousing(the one that holds the front seal in.) There will be a retaining ring around each of the two bearings sticking out. Remove both of these. Next, take the tail shaft housing off. To do this, you will first remove the speedo drive gear, rear trans mount, and other sensors off the back of the trans. Then remove all the bolts and tap around the housing lightly with a rubber mallet. Pull this off and sit it off to the side.

Next, stand the trans up on end(put the input shaft back through the bellhousing and use the bellhousing as a stand) pull on the output shaft and wiggle back and fourth, and the entire gear assembly should come out of the trans. If this doesn't work, you may have to lay the trans back on the side and tap around the edges of the bearings with a small punch to free them up.

When you pull the trans out of the case, you can begin looking for small problems. You can check the thrust washer to see if it is broken, check for bent shift forks, and check for broken shift fork bolts.

Here are a few more pics. The last two are what is wrong with my trans. I somehow managed to break a shift fork bolt off. My guess is that it was bent, and then it finally just snapped as I was shifting gears.

Do they make rebuild kits for these? And is it hard to do? I figure while Im doin this whole build up thing, I might as well refresh my tranny... Should I let a shop do it, or is it something I can do? *Ive never messed with a tranny before, just engines*

good to see you break sections of your car all at one time.

clutch master, clutch disc, and shift fork/trans
thats almost a grand slam if you had fried your clutch slave too on the same day.

Hal: I replaced the clutch slave again too, because the boot was torn. That close enough?

Bowtie: every R154 Trans I've seen looks like it has orange silicone holding it together, so I believe that is factory.

Rakkasan : I don't believe it would be that hard, you would need a press and a few other tools. It doesn't look bad to do, the main thing would be to get all necessary diagrams and take your time and remember where everything goes.

Pioneer: For the 250 I just paid for a JDM low mileage trans from a member of the board, It wasn't worth it to me. I may attempt to rebuild this one later, or just replace the shift fork bolt, since that is all that is wrong with mine.

Mallory: This is as far as I plan on going into the trans. I pulled the rod out and put an easy out in the bolt and got it out. I could take more pics of the trans before I put it back together, but I had a few members asking on how to get it out of the case in my other thread. So, I replied to thier request with this thread. If you feel it is informative enough, put it in the faq. If not, it will still be available in the seach function to members looking for answers. I just wanted the knowledge to be available.

I come from a land down under
Gixx: A bit of a tip that may help later.

Grab an old Driveshaft Yoke and cut the Uni joint end off and discard, then get either a piece of heavy box tubing of a sheet of thick flat plate and weld the Yoke section to it.

You can then eith put the Box one in a Vice of the Sheet one on the ground and slide the Trans into it to work on it vertically (trust me it's much easier).

Hope this helps.
