Here is how to disassemble the R154. I only go up until the point of removing the gears from the case. You can spot simple problems this way.
First, you need to remove all of the bolts inside the bellhousing. Then remove the bellhousing from the trans. It should come off pretty easily. Remove the front plate behind the bellhousing(the one that holds the front seal in.) There will be a retaining ring around each of the two bearings sticking out. Remove both of these. Next, take the tail shaft housing off. To do this, you will first remove the speedo drive gear, rear trans mount, and other sensors off the back of the trans. Then remove all the bolts and tap around the housing lightly with a rubber mallet. Pull this off and sit it off to the side.
Next, stand the trans up on end(put the input shaft back through the bellhousing and use the bellhousing as a stand) pull on the output shaft and wiggle back and fourth, and the entire gear assembly should come out of the trans. If this doesn't work, you may have to lay the trans back on the side and tap around the edges of the bearings with a small punch to free them up.
When you pull the trans out of the case, you can begin looking for small problems. You can check the thrust washer to see if it is broken, check for bent shift forks, and check for broken shift fork bolts.
