sad to say my freshly rebuild r154 died. it was running nice except for the whine i neutral and in gear but other than that it was good. i started to get a small noise which was hard to describe but it would go away after driving a little while. anyways i let my friend drive my car because he wants a manual car and one jerk of the clutch pedal and it happened. it sounded like it was knocking. really loud. any time the tranny was spinning it would knock. so i pulled the tranny today to find fourth gear on the input shaft was missing 5 teeth!!!!!! when i drained the oil it didnt look bad but damn!!!! everything else looks ok though. but i have an extra input shaft but the small peice of metal that goes into the pilot bearing is broken off from previous owner. that is why i bought a used input shaft and now it died. the origional broken pilot shaft input shaft has a good fourth gear though. my question is can i takle it to a machine shop to get a new pilot shaft put on. maybe drill a hole down the center and get a dowel of the right size put in. i do not want to find a new input shaft because that took me months!!!!!

cliffs: can i repair an input shaft with a broken pilot shaft?
sorry for crappy phone pics but ehh,
5 teeth missing!!! FML

Hmm, the noises your gearbox was making before the meltdown have intrigued me.. My freshly rebuilt r154 (sychno's, bearings, thrust washer and donor 1st gear/clutch hub) also has a whine, though it's A LOT quieter than before the build.. and there is also a faint, but noticeable knocking noise coming from the driveline while in neutral. Though i can't remember if it stops when the clutch is depressed. It also makes a nasty clunking noise when in gear and tapping on the throttle.. kind of like a thrust wind up on the gears :3d_frown:

tap *clunk-clunk*
depress *clunk*
tap *clunk-clunk*

I'll be pulling it out again soon before I have a failure.. Pretty disappointed after spending the money and time rebuilding it all. But theres no one else to blame but myself :icon_razz

hmm fun car (5-spd) or boring car Th-350...seems cut and dry to me.

I don't want to offend the drag racers but autos are just so boring except in a straight line.

My a340e is quite exciting straight, or twisting. Just remember, you can't shift faster than fluid. That said, I still want a r154, but not for excitement.

shitty.

as easy as it might seem rebuilding a tranny isn't something anybody can do. you can just do like a pro your first time. even if you go by the book. it seemed like after i rebuilt mine all these people are talking about how they rebuilt/ or are rebuiding their trannys. all i can say is let this be proof you can't just rip in these with no clue as to what you are actually messing with.

edit: yz good luck on what ever you do. i would find another tranny considering that is you best bet. by the way the input shaft looked i'm sure your counter shaft is toast too. that right there is $$$.

ive been into trannys before but not this one until i rebuilt it, i dont think my assembly caused this but idk. the counter shaft looked fine and as soon as i heard the noise i drove to my house 1/2 a mile away slowly.

black89t its interesting you say that, I've worked with several different fwd transaxles and a few tremecs before too.. I don't think *anyone* can go ripping into their gearbox, but rebuilding them isn't exactly a dark art either. Maybe it only is when it concerns r154s :icon_razz

Not to worry: The knocking sound in neutral should disappear with the clutch disengaged. It is caused by normal lash between the clutch gear on the input shaft, and the mating gear on the cluster. The engine varies slightly in speed between each power stroke at idle, especially if you have a light flywheel.

I've seen people go nuts over this since the mid 1960's, and it amounts to nothing. GM had made attempts to quiet that noise, but dropped it later. I'll go into detail if you want, but it is not a DIY fix.
