Are the brackets that bolt the engine and tranny together different for the R154 vs the W58? Or are they interchangeable. I know the transmission crossmembers are different.

They are not the same(at least 1 is different). A search on it will find more threads about it but I'm certain one is different just cant recall which side.

They are known as the wing brackets, might help with the search.

It's worth mentioning that they are different between Pre-89 and 89+. At least that is my experience. I have a driver's side from a Pre-89.

How are they different? I wasn't aware of any model year changes made to the motor or transmission.

LH side is different for R154 and W58/A340E, but stayed the same for all years.
RH is the same for R154 and W58/A340E, but 86, 87-88, and 89-92 all have different part numbers (3 different part numbers).

None of them change up to any of the others, I don't know exactly what's different, but I'm sure they are probably interchangeable.

It looked to me that there was a slight variation. I'll have to look at it a bit closer, but I was positive there was a difference. Then again I would take Jeff's word over mine. :)

There's definitely a difference is the passenger side bracket between years. It doesn't line up quite right. Before I knew it, I snapped one trying to force it. I ended using around 3 lock washers on the lower bellhousing bolt to make it mate-up since I can never source the correct one.

That happened to me. I ended up snapping the passenger side as well. The driver side seems to be the same except it seems a little beefier!

For sale? Haha

The one I have is the left side and it is from a pre-89 so it isn't as thick. I'll take a pic and post it. You can have it if you want.

I nearly shit myself when I heard it snap. Scared the fuck out of me. I actually thought that I cracked the bellhousing. Luckily the cast brackets are pretty brittle at that point.

Thanks, however, I did a AT-MT swap a few years ago and I have no idea what year the tranny is out of. Nor what year the previous brackets I tried were from. Therefore it just isn't worth the hassle. The washers worked surprisingly well. Not to mention I have the BIC tranny and engine brace installed; so there's barely any movement anyways.

Mine snapped at the end that bolts to the engine so it didn't scare me as much! :)

That BIC brace seems like a great idea. I've been eyeing it, but I may just have to pull the trigger.

Anyhow, here are some pics of what appear to be the differences:

Right side, the 89+ is definitely thicker where the bolt closest to the back of the engine goes:

And here is the difference between the pre-89 and 89+ for the left side.
pre-89:

89+:

You can see the rib is a little thicker for the 89+.

well my engine is a 90 IIRC, and the tranny is a 87-88 IIRC. Can anyone point in the right direction? I have the stock ones for a 86.5. 7M-GE and W58 of course.
