My 1jz is currently running a 3" downpipe and full 3" exhaust.

In order to pass inspection i'll be installing a pretty basic 3" cat.

However, the exhaust is very loud, even in the cressida, and I have already gotten heat from cops for it.

The current exhaust appears to have a long(18" or so) resonator but i wanted to see if there were any obvious suggestions to quiet things down.

Would replacing the resonator with a glass pack be a good idea?

FWIW, I'm more concerned with Db reduction then power loss. If i loose a little power it wont be the end of the world. Also, since it may matter, the engine has stock c12 turbos, etc.

Your neighborhood muffler shop could weld in an extra resonator. For a little bit more, they would wled flanges in so you can replace it at will.

I'm running 2 Vibrant ultra quiet resonators because they are so short and N1 apexi muffler, also i have metal core 3" cat that is actually made the car quieter than magnaflow 3" ceramic cat which made the car sound like shit besides being loud. but honestly i spent alot of money trying different resonators and Vibrant seems to be the best out there. dont waist your money on glasspack. learn from my mistakes. My car never set off an alarm, it gets lost in the traffic very well, in two years not a single cop stopped me and thats with 3" all the way from a turbo without a silencer. I also tried Apexi silencer with spring mechanism which opens under pressure, that was still when i didnt have cat or resonators and this silencer is just a waist of money. Anyway, this set up is very respectable on a street in my subjective oppinion. it doesnt make your car sound like you are on a budget. it is just a bit louder than old g coupe or FX 35 at full throttle and way way quieter than any integra or CRX with straight through. so it is very civilized and grown up exhaust set up.

P.S. Stock twins cofig

Pernilongo,

Sounds like what i'm looking for. Where did you source the Vibrant resonators and Apexi?
Also, got any pics?

What he said....

To hell with the cat. Just put a silencer in it (I only put mine in when racing after 10PM at PIR to meet the Db rating requirement). If you are going to install a cat, get a high-flow 3" cat. Installing a glass pack will make the car louder. My dad used to have Purple Horny glass packs on his California Special Mustang (532 RWHP) and he would shake windows to the point that they almost shattered, along with making most people deaf from the roar (temporarily of course).

Yeah i'll make some pics today, no problems. as far as sources is concerned i think my N1 turbo muffler was around 160, from optionimports.com resonators around 80 each from Verocious Motorsports, and cat i just don't remember but i think verocious also have them. These parts are not cheap, so another option that i didn't have is the full cat back, i think Tanabe came up with Medalion touring concept G for MK3 and they say it's under 93db which is better than old medalion hyper which is not that quiet. I don't know what is more cost efficeient buying parts or just adapting this cat back from tanabe.

I am 3" all the way to the Apex N1 with a tube type resonator. This is my second / longer resonator searching to tone it down, which it did a bit. Did you install one res, before and after the cat? I have a test pipe where I can easily install a cat, but there doesn't seem to be enought room to instll two resonators together....from the cat back.

Thanks for the input on the Apex silencer that did not work because I was thinking about trying one. You saved me some $$.

Both of my resonators are after cat. They are only 14" long and 10" for a cat. i think my cat is in place of stock cat and then one of the resonators about 9" after it and the second resonator is in place of stock pre-muffler or whatever this thing is. on picture 2 is a ground clearence.

Got around to adding the cat. It made a minimal difference, at best. In the future, i hope to take some of the advice given here to quiet the cressida down for a more pleasant DD experience and will post up with results.

Thanks
