when changing the head gasket do you have to have both the head and the block machined or just the head? i tried searching but didnt really get a good straight answer. or if someone know where a link to this info is that would help also. thanks guys. this will be my first bhg repiar and hopefully my last.

and did it over heat?

you need a machinists straight edge to see if the head and block are warped.

if the head is warped itll need to be cut.

i will be using a mhg. i havent even bought the car yet im waiting on my taxes but the guy said that the car has started to overheat and he parked it. i will be getting it for 1k or less so i didnt wanna tell him that the car can be fixed rather easily or give him any reason to want to keep the car.
the reason i am asking is because the shop i work at said if i would pay the mechanic his days wages that they would do the hg for me and thats only going to be 100 bux. and he's a damn good mechanic plus i can always check in on him.

Yep...both the block and head will have to be decked. The surface finish is important...a 30 RA for most MHG's, 50 RA for a Cometic (but you have to remove the rivets). I'd use ARP bolts or studs torqued down to ARP spec when you install the head.

Since you'll have the block out, you might want to check the bearing clearances. Especially if coolant got into the oil.

just ask your mechanic to see what he thinks about it. I have done several hg replacements not only on my own supra but several other cars as well and never had a problem. if the block is strait just clean it real good with a long sanding block. but having the head resurfaced is a must.

...why take a risk on what the mechanic thinks?

do it right the first time and have the block surfaced.

ok so any ideas on the full price for the bhg repair. i wouldnt think it would be too much. the shop said they could do it for 600 bux im guessing they would be getting all the machine work done also. is there no way to leave all the internals inside the block and have the block decked?

yes, the 7m is a funny animal. the inline six has a bow through all, either through the facktory or over heating issues. my first motor was 00.005 five thousands bow in the middel wow cost $60.00 dollers for reserface.so yes all blocks are worped more than others if you dont mill the block after your retorqe ,the head will simply bow to the block.make shure you ask for the fine stone, better for mhg.

so all together i should be able to get the head resurfaced and the block milled for less than $100? or did i get confused with what you said? either way i wanna make sure its done right.
