Quick 87-88 turbo question

I am in the process of a swap from NA to GTE. I have a Pre 89 GTE and a 1989 car. I was looking into getting a turbo parts car. If I buy a 87 or 88 turbo car, can I just swap the parts or is it set in stone that a post 89 car has to have the electronics and harness from a post 89 car. The 87 and 88 turbo seem to be able to be had for cheaper that is why I was looking into them.

The wiring harness changed on the '89+ cars...grey vs yellow ECU plugs, and yes they are different. If you swap a pre '89 into an '89+ car, you will need to swap the ECU and main harness.
