It doesn't sound like a blown headgasket to me, it sounds like a blown turbo.. or something causing you to burn oil.

The powersteering leak will not cause smoke.

Sounds like you have a water/oil leak somewhere in your engine bay, keep an eye on that and try to see where it's comming from. Probably from your valve covers and landing on the exhaust manifold.

The 1000RPM idle is a vaccum leak, most likely.

Like Hot said your turbo is most likely blown, check for excessive side to side shaft play, in and out, and lastly if there is any oil leaking from either housing your seals have gone bad. Your powersteering fluid wouldn't smoke, (at least I've never seen that happen on any car), and you may see white vapor from coolant overheating and boiling causing the water vapor and sweet smell the invade the engine bay. Pull off the downpipe and intake tube and investigate from there. Good luck.

An external leak no (unless it gets on hot stuff of course) but an internal leak in the idle up valve will cause PS fluid to be aspirated into the intake manifold. I've seen it happen on two cars. If an external leak is also present the loss of fluid from this will be missed.
