I have the feeling that you're thinking that BPU is some sort of special stand alone modification - It's not. It's a mixture of 'simple' breathing mods (usually de-cat, full exhaust system, air filter and raised boost).

Can be used on any motor will varying degrees of success, so engines like the 2JZ will see leaps in horsepower while others will see more modest power gains.

to de-cat the exhaust will get you maybe 5hp... aka. nothing but a louder exhaust.

intake, full exhaust, hard metal pipes for the IC count as BPU?
BPU+ = stated above, but with like cam gears
BPU++ = all of the above plus another mod...

its just the easier way of saying you have few mods instead of writing them out. although i never hear it from MK3 people... just WRX and MK4 people... that and they always talk about 'stages' of shit like it matters what 'stage' there clutch is....

I would wager removing both cats from a turbo supra will net you more than 5hp. On modern N/A cars the gains from removing a cat are minimal, but turbo's hate back pressure and thats what that lovely starter cat does, cause back pressure.

BPU = Basic Power Upgrades or Bolt-on Power Upgrades.

Both mean the same thing, usually intake and full exhaust are your basics. From there BPU+ would be a boost controller of some kind and a full hardpipe/new ic setup. Past that the waters get muddy as to what is a level or "stage". I think I my car qualifies as APU though.... (Advanced Power Upgrades)

I love it when the honda kids (or any group of morons) argue over what does and doesn't count as an extra "+" on my list of mods. I just tell em Im stock.

on a "BPU" upgrade, you would already have a 3'' downpipe without a cat in that location. i know on a STOCK turbo supra, removing the two cats will yield some awesome power along with opening the exhaust to a true 3'' system. but once you get the 3'' downpipe on, having a cat or not isnt going to make or break your HP record...

The pre-cat hurts more than the main cat. Only a dyno will show the actual difference.

The tests showed that at stock boost pressures of 6.8 psi, the total system restriction is 6 psi. The restriction brakes down to 3 psi in the front of both converters together and surprisingly, a like amount is found in front of the muffler. This means that for a change, a smog legal version using the muffling properties of the pre and main converters coupled to an ultra low restriction muffler can allow for impressive gains in both response and overall horsepower....Our initial testing on the unit was performed with the main cat in place and showed a 30-horse gain at the rear wheels at 5000 rpm with no other modifications. In later testing, with the Cartech intercooler, on both the dyno and at the drag strip we enjoyed a slight improvement with a cat by-pass in place..... The HKS system can be installed with or without (for racing use only) the cat. Our chassis testing has shown that bolting on the competition systems (no cat) from the various manufacturers averages a 35+ horsepower increase to the rear wheels at 5000 rpm with no other modifications. The HKS system proved this out with a dyno verified 36 total rear wheel horsepower increase in our tests....
