I received some fittings to set up my new Oil system with filter relo and full flow cooler. I am using a Permacool Oil thermostat, and the fitting you see below is a 1/2 npt to -8 an fitting. You can clearly see both ends of that fitting, and the difference in exit size. Reading the instruction manual of the thermostat, it say that if using AN fittings, we must drill out the AN side which looks to be restrictive. Is that really necessary? They say it may damage the themostats' valve system if left with that restriction. If I do have to do it, how would I go about enlarging the fitting? With a drill bit? As anyone set-up their system without drilling out the fittings?

Thanks

I come from a land down under
Ummm it comes down to the smallest restriction in the system (usually a bend in a hose) As JJ stated you can flow a HUGE amount through the -8 fitting and if you do drill it out what do you do with the mating fitting?
(not enough meat to drill it to match)

Looks to me that if you drilled out the AN side to the size of the NPT side, that you woudl lose the whole sealing surface of the fitting.

I wouldnt do it personally, i dont forsee it as enough of a restriction to harm the valve system of the thermostat.

JMO though

You don't want to drill the fitting out. AN fittings are designed to seal on the 37 deg angle...mess it up and you risk losing the seal. A -8 fitting will flow a LOT of oil...more than you will probably ever need.
