Does anyone remember reading about the pvc intercooler pipes someone made and installed on their car? I have searched and cant find it, but I know most of you are smarter than I am and I know you can find it. Can someone please find the link and let me know where it is. I'm thinking about trying it, because I just had my turbo upgraded and it blew my hose off. The turbo has a 2.5 inch outlet on it so I rigged it up to the stock i.c. pipe but it didnt last five minutes. I'm going to redo the whole pipe from turbo to i.c. with pvc and try it. Thanks.

pvc isnt recommended for piping cause it softens/melts at a low temp (also gives off harmful fumes but you probably dont mind that). some people get away with using it on intakes, so maybe it'd work for the charge pipe on a turbo setup (cold side) but it definitely wouldnt work for the hot pipe right off the turbo

You'll want to be careful about making the hot pipe out of PVC as that air is not cooled yet and the air inside the pipe plus the ambient temperature of that area could melt the pvc in no time.

I just now read the other posts and didn't know it would melt, because I've seen a couple of cars on here with it done. Also for DIY guy, I do care about the harmful fumes it may give off. I wouldn't knowingly hurt anything if I could help it. I just read the thread someone put on here and thought it would be a quick way to get my car back running, without spending a fortune. Thanks for everyones suggestions and helpful ideas.

could you use 3in instead of the 2in... and what if I instead of using pvc I used exhaust piping... or something to that extent... aluminum...

Really? I used PVC pretty much right off the turbo for a year without a problem. Have you even tried the PVC mod or are you just spreading speculation?

Thanks Rakkasan, How close to turbo outlet did your pvc go? I have a new garrett turbo and it has a 2.5 inch outlet so my stock hose will not join up to it. That is why I was going to try this mod. Glad to hear you didnt have any problems for a year. In a years time I plan to upgrade to a new intercooler and hard pipes, but I really need something to work right now. Thanks again for your two cents worth.

I had about a 2" gap from the outlet of the turbo to the end of the PVC (I used a piece of the stock hose about 4 1/2" long as a coupler). Make sure that you use a 1"-2" piece of metal pipe, such as exhaust piping, inside the end of the PVC as pionted out in JBL's instructions. This will keep the PVC from shrinking due to the heat & pressure for the clamp. If you don't use the metal pipe, the mod will last for a mile, tops.

wasnt aware of the metal pipe trick. it may work but still, there's a better, simpler solution....like a silicone reducer.

yes i've used pvc as piping. never right from the turbo though. I don't have to try it to know it will deform under heat.

keep in mind that bigger is not always better. 3 inch hardpipes means more volume for your turbo to pressurize. you cant have boost pressure in the intake manifold(where it counts) untill you have pressure in the pipes. so big pipes can add to your lag time. i'm going to be going with 2.5 inch pipes from the ic to the tb, and 2.5 or 2.25 from the turbo to the ic.

I plan on using 2.5 pvc. I had a reducer coupling on there first and thats what blew off. I'm going to go 2.5 all the way to the intercooler and then reduce it to 2" or 2.25, whatever the stock intercooler is. Rakkasan has got over 800 posts and he saids that he has used it and didnt have any problems so that is good enough for me. Maybe I wont tear up more than I can pay for.
