Hope to put the head back on this weekend, and I figured I would start a technical thread so I dont post 40 threads over the next day or two :).

I am going to be putting a stock gasket back on my Supra and I am curious as to how clean the block needs to be. I scrapped at it for an hour or so with a metal blade and managed to get most of the old gasket off. I can still see some metal spots where the old gasket was but I can't seem to get anything more then a few particles of stuff off of the block. Since I am not using a MHG I figured it doesn't have to be perfect, but I want to get it right the first time.

Torqing the head down: Whats the process? I have the TSRM(sp) on it, and it shows the pattern but nothing of how to torque it. Should I go to a certain lb before going all the way to 73lbs?

Do I need to use the head bolt washers?

Clean the block as best you can, use a knife or razor blade to remove all the high spots of the old gasket material. While the composite gasket is more forgiving than a metal one, you really would rather have piece of mind doing this right the first time. Torque the head bolts in the pattern outline in the TSRM is three stages. Start off with all bolts being hand tight then torque to 25ft/lbs, 50ft/lbs, and then the final 73 ft/lbs. When the whole motor is back together start it, I like to run it through two heat cycles ( bring motor to operating temp, complete cool down, bring back to operating temp, complete cool down). During the first cycle you can be checking for any oil and water leaks and repair them before you run through the second cycle. After you complete the heat cycles, remove the valve covers and retorque the head bolts one last time. And by the way, YES YOU DO NEED THE WASHERS.

No problem, by the way I forgot to let you know to chase the threads on the block for the head bolts. If you don't have a tap and die set to do this, an old tooth brush and some degreaser or WD-40 will work also. Then be sure to dip the head bolts (threaded end) in some light weight motor oil or use some graphite assy. lube. This will ensure that you get the proper torque.

Well I got the head on last night, as well as the lower intake manifold and fuel rail. I also got all the pullies on, and timed her up. only to then realize I had forgotten the plate that goes behind the cam sprokets. *doh* After fixing that and timing her all back up, everything looks great. I will work on it for a few hours this afternoon but then that will be the last of it till Thursday evening as I have a huge test to study for Wed night.

What oil should I run in this thing? Will regular green coolant work as well? I am going to flush the cooling system out a few times before I take the car out on the road.

they say you can run pretty much any glycol based coolant, these days, but i always use the toyota red coolant. when i put my motor back together, i put in non-synthetic 10w30, and i'll run that around for a bit, clean out the system using it, (also have straight water in the cooling system to flush it out) then drain both, fill again with oil and water for cooling, run it around for another day or two, then i'm switching to 10w40 mobile 1 synthetic, and toyota red coolant.

Thanks shaeff, just what I needed to know. I didn't get her finished tonight because I got snagged up on getting everything hooked up again. This was my first time tearing into a 7mgte and that was a few weeks ago, but once the juices started flowing I could remember where things go again. I would say I am withing 4 hours of being done. *crosses fingers*

Well after finding time to work on it alittle bit here and there, I have found myself with only a few problems left to fix.

Can't find a single nut for the turbo-elbow bolts, and a bolt broke off into the thermostat housing, which I will try and remove tomorow.
