Project Turbo Jeep: Need SM help

I've thrown this idea around for at least a year and I have a ct26 that I plan to put in. I've asked around on some jeep forums but I think the idea of a turbo is taboo to most jeep owners. To them turbos only belong on hondas and every single turbo has massive lag. I've caught alot of flack and I'm looking to prove these guys wrong. I picked a ct because it isn't a tiny turbo but it should be slightly small for the 4.0 inline 6(and partially because I have a supra and already had a ct). The 4.0 is a low end torque monster and not a high revving motor so I'm hoping this small of a turbo will put the power right where I need it and not choke out on the top end. I plan to do a similar setup to this guy,http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=661277, but plan on doing a front mount and using a FTC-1 piggyback/larger injectors from Split Second to tune the engine. I'm thinking up the questions as I go so I'll be back time and again with them. Try to keep the bashing to a minimum I'm already catching it from my jeep friends.

1) The ct can't be turned on its side right? The oil intake has to be on the top and the drain on the bottom, not side to side? It would be way easier to pipe if I could.

2) Where would be the best place to run the oil from? Kit maybe? How do the na-t guys do it?

3) Anybody live near Knoxville that wants to help?:naughty:

I'm fairly certain that if you flip the CT on it's side, it'll ooze oil out into whichever side you've got facing down. (assuming that you mean you want either the exhaust or compressor housing facing the ground?) The feed line on the CT is right next to the drain- on the bottom.

The N/A->T guys use a -4AN hose T'd off from the oil pressure sensor port. Any pressurized port should work.

If I were near Knoxville, I'd be in your driveway doing the happy dance riiiiight... now.

Oh, and I think you're going to choke that motor up top with a CT. You'd be better off with a T4 setup. You can get some stuff used pretty cheap. And T4 flanges are a dime a dozen. This is really cool, you should post pics!

The most my engine ever sees is 3.5k I think maybe once 4k rpms tearing through the gears. If you follow that link he says he used a 50 trim ebay turbo and had over 250 ft/lbs to the wheels under 2.5k rpms. That's a decent kick in the ass for a 2,500 pound, short wheelbase brick. I'm counting on that extra liter over the 7m for a quick spool. My powerband is all on the low end.

Oh and by flipping the turbo on it's side I mean the oil feed and drain would be facing the left instead of down. The exhaust would enter straight from the bottom. I remember reading somewhere that it drains by gravity and if that's true it would just pool in the turbo.

The intake and exhaust manifold are both on the right side of the engine so I'm thinking run a wrapped exhaust under the engine to the left side where I'll have more room. I can squeeze one of those cheap ebay intercoolers in front of my radiator. With the extra room I'll clear on the right side losing that air box I'm thinking a second ac compressor for on board air:evil2:.

Not looking to swap another engine, just give mine a kick in the balls and wake it up. I couldn't buy another v8 for the price I'm doing this project, much less get it in and running.

turbo setups are fairly easy on the 4.0 motors. My friend has one setup with an ebay t60. He hacked the stock header, and just put in a J pipe to the other side of the motor. On that, he put a turbo flange. 7psi, and he is just using a rising rate FPR to control it, its running fairly rich at this point (ARF in the low 11s). His is a hot air setup tho, so GL with the IC mounting. IIRC, he is using a sandwich adaptor and running the oil lines from there. With this style setup, you could just do the J pipe, with a 90* bend on the end, and mount the ct26 like stock, only with the hotside angled towards the motor.

Hell, I would give bonus points to making an ebay 7m DP work with it.

Yeah that LT1 is going to be a bad motor and the jeep it's going into is getting stretched into a full buggy.

The IC shouldn't be too hard to mount I'll have to relocate the radiator back half an inch or so and see what I can do with getting a fan shroud back on there. The PO had to take the stock one off when he put the 1" body lift on. I'll robably just go electric for ease and function(crawling speeds on the trails).

I've cleaned up most of the wiring mess in the engine bay and am going to relocate the fuse box and cruise control back to the firewall. That'll leave me plenty of room for the turbo and make blocking off the battery/wiring from heat easier. As for mounting the turbo I found an obscure thread on a toyota offroad forum where the guy used a ct26 and took the turbo apart and twisted the middle bearing section to have the oil flange draining down. I'm going to look into that more since I have to pull the hotside off to weld a crack around the wastegate anyways. You guys think it's possible?

This is taking longer than expected to get all the parts together. I have a friend who owns a custom car shop but has been in Cali doing some engineering work out there. He just got back and found out about my project and has offered me a hx30 holset turbo he took off the 4bt he put into his jeep, oil lines, external wastegate, tuning, etc. Hopefully with his backing I can restart gathering parts to get this dream of mine off the ground. I can't find any good comparisons of a stock ct26 vs the stock hx30, apparently holset keeps their compressor maps secret, though I think it will be better suited for the 4.0 motor.

Supercharger kits are available for the 4.0 but it's general consensus that turbo's don't belong on jeeps. I'm actually planning to use the same engine management that comes with the Avenger supercharger kit.
