So I was thinking about how much I miss my Supra and wishing for a daily driver that was faster. I came across a Custom Made Turbo Kit for my Daily driver Neon consisting of a T3/T04E Turbo, piping, Intercooler off an old Mitsubishi Starion, Custom Intake Manifold, cheapy generic exhaust manifold, and custom Throttle Body setup. What's pretty sick is the Throttle Body setup which consists of 4 30mm Motorcycle TB's each hooked up to one cylinder intake port. Supposedly the guy who's selling it invested about $2800 into the raw parts and fabbing. He want $900 for it. The Turbo Needs a rebuild. I don't care so much for the Turbo as I do about the intake manifold. Of course I would need some sort of Fuel management system which makes me hesitate. Then again, this kinda of setup might not ever be seen anywhere else, not even in SRT-4's. So I'm at a loss. I WANT to turbo my shitty little Neon since it is lazy dog slow. I've lost to CIVIC Si's, Lancer's, and TSX's. Could be my shifting, but it's hard to make up for the complete lack of acceleration the neon suffer's from. What does everyone think? By the way, I am waiting to pull the block out of the Supra (bent my cheap hoist, due to shitty/improperly tightened bolts) so I can get a quote to get the block/head lapped, cylinders bored, valves done and a general clean-up. it sucks because starting next week, I won't be able to work on the Supra since it's sitting in my garage and will be there for the next 2 or so months while my mom does a room addition to my house.

I don't know, man.. a Neon? Even if the SRT-4 was RWD and ditched the name "Neon", I still don't think I could live with myself.

I feel your pain everyday, I dd a 95 cavalier 4 door. It's not even a five speed, psh 3-speed auto. What prevents me from doing it, is I know my car will just break and it will have been a waste of money and I'll need another car. Good luck in whatever you decide to do, but yeah, it's probably not worth it.

Man, my '97 eclipse was NA meaning it came with the DOHC neon motor. With just an intake, 60mm jeep tb, UDP and 2.5" exhaust I was running 15.4s in the 1/4 mile and 9.8s in the 8th mile. The car had a freak motor though, I did a compression test with my buddies and found that the car had ratios between 220-225 on all four cylinders. That car weighed a little over 2600lbs. In a neon with similar mods 14s are possible.

If you boost it, low 13's to high 12s are possible on a stock block. The motors can only make about 250-300 hp before they fail. The weak link is the piston ring lands, they seem to crack at the slightest sign of detonation when pushing it, but with a thicker headgasket about 12-15psi with a super 20G is possible. For comparison though, my buddy has a NA SOHC neon 4 door 5spd that is capable of low 15s high 14s and all he has done is head work.

My point is just what CtSupra is saying. It's a Neon-bottom line. The Neon has always been known as an unreliable piece of junk.

There are plenty of other DD prospects out there that are a much smarter buy.

-Toyota Camry
-Toyota Corolla
-Toyota Celica
-Nissan Maxima
-Nissan Altima
-Honda Accord
-Honda Civic (this was its intended use, as we know)

The list doesn't end there, either. You can find plenty of early/earlier models of the cars listed for cheap.

I don't think you could've made much of a worse choice in buying what is supposed to be a highly-reliable/dependable DD. I'm not knocking you, just questioning your judgement on the situation.

DDs are made for a place to put your "My other car is a Supra" stickers, and to get you to work.
modding the DD anything more than mebbe like intake is asking for trouble
<and no real point in rockin an intake on the DD anyway>

all that having been said, we all know the temptation...
just drop the cash into the 'real car'

If you want a DD that gets good gas mileage and wont break, get a civic. they are cheap parts are cheap, and you have to fill up like once a milinium.

So far Neon has got 110K miles on it... I feel compelled to make everything I drive fast. However, long before I got in the Supra, I was a devout Dodge man. The Choice to buy the Neon was mainly price. 5 Grand for an 01 Neon R/T. A 5-speed manual, 2.0L "HO" motor (supposedly 150hp to the FW) LEATHER interior, side impact airbags, and the usual go-fast looking crap: wheels, spoiler, lip kit. I find people always have misconceptions about the car. Yes, it's a NEON. Yes there have been recalls, and nightmarish stories about head gasket failure etc.. But this is NOT a surprise to me, since my FIRST car (Supra) decided to blow it's head gasket 3 times. It's a cheaply made car with most of the interior covered in hard plastic, but it IS a fun car, albeit FWD. I can toss it into a corner with much more zeal than I could with some civic or camry. I like to EXPERIENCE the drive in whatever car I'm in. Whether it's about comfort or fun. So whatever you think a daily driver should be, it's not my definition if it isn't this:
"A Daily Driver should be just enough to keep your tongue wait until the weekend comes and you pull your weekend racer out of the garage. It should be fun, and it should be practical. Depending on your preferences, reliability and gas mileage will be up to you. Easy to Maintain (what american car isn't?) , cheap to fix (alot cheaper than that Civic I used to own), and above all else, you should be happy with the car."

This is my conviction. I live by it. I could have gotten a Civic or a Camry, or and Accord or whatever, but those cars don't appeal to my dogma. They are tired, bland, and boring. Because of their popularity, I run the risk of seeing something exactly like it. So far, I have seen 2 R/T's. I've seen more SRT's then that. I like being different. I don't like having what everyone else has. I accept the possible risk and can only hope. To me, a car being "more reliable according to it's brand" is a bunch of bullshit. I admit, I'm probably more jaded than most. I've owend an Acura Integra that developed blow-by then crashed that into a wall, an old Civic whose clutch unwittingly failed on me then gets stolen, another Civic that would eat up brakes every couple of months, and finally, the Wonderfully engineered Supra, that decides to blow it's head gasket 3 times with a 55lb/ft head torque rating. I don't regret owning any of those cars. In fact, each allowed me to be a bit different in the way they looked and drove. And I still love my Supra. More than Turboing the Neon, I want to see her run. But $$ rules the buying world, and deals shouldn't always be passed up. I seem to have better luck sticking to Toyota or DCX products (my cousin's first car was a toyota truck I found online. She drove it until it DIED at almost 300K miles). My mom wrecked our old Dodge Caravan that was going on to 160K miles. Our current Chrysler New Yorker has about 140K miles on it. The worst that happened was a seized A/C compressor. I could go on about cons and pros, but I figure, if you don't take risk you'll end up regretting what COULD have been, rather than taking the risk and whatever happens, you may or may not regret it, but you have that chance of not. If you let the opportunity slip by, you WILL regret it guaranteed.

With that essay being ripped out, I decided that Yes, I will turbo the Neon. I don't care if it's a Neon. I care that it'll be fun. Take precautions in reliability as much as I can, but you can't predict what you don't know. Only make assumptions.. and I'm not too keen on making those. I'm not going to be dumb and boost 10lbs into the motor until I decide to get headwork/gasket redone. At the very LEAST it will not be as finicky as the Supra. However, I won't have a place to work on it until winter break. Plus I got to figure out how the hell I'm going to move the Supra (apparently the construction worker's need "room" to work.) Slackers.

Either way, thanks for everyone's opinions, it was good to see how other's view the situation.

That I will agree with..... the Civic I owned was a friggin POS the entire month I owned it... the only other question I have is......

Isn't the head off of your Supra at the moment? I'd be more worried about getting that put back on first.
