i was replacing the head gasket with a cometic mhg, and arp head studs, and when i put it back together last night, it doesn't run right. it has no power, but i got the cams and crank in the right places. im sure of it, it doesn't have a lopey idle at all, but its real boggy. i plugged all of the small vacuum ports on the bottom of the upper intake manifold, and blocked off the egr valve. when i tried to reset the timing, it wouldn't do anything when i put a ground in the circuit box thing like im supposed to. i made sure i stuck wires way down in there but nothing happened. that box has all that electrical grease, but i thought i was getting past all of that to get a ground. the check engine light is flashing 5 times, then 1 time. i think its a code 51, but im not sure, and don't know what that means. anything would be helpful, i was gunna take it to the track, but i can't get the thing running!!!!

code 51 is the switch condition signal......check the tps circuit as well as the TPS itself.... I don't think it would be the A/C switch circuit although you never know. Use the TSRM, it helps a hell of a lot. -val

If you had the CPS out, which you did, installing incorrectly can give you grossly misadjusted timing, and your car will start but run like shit. If it is a tooth or two off.

And answer his question above.

Sounds like i must have incorrectly installed the cps, i pulled it out, and pretty much just plugged it back in, but i stopped my engine at 0 degrees before taking it out. the cps must have been moved a little bit in the process of putting it all back together. i set my timing to 12 degrees, a little more aggressive than stock.

This reminds me of my friend's 85' celica. He rebuilt the motor (HG, machining, port and polish) but when he got it on the road it had no power. He assumed he set the timing correct, but needed a new TPS. I didn't believe him so I tested his TPS with my meter.
Turns out he installed it without making sure it hit the metal tab - the throttle wasn't making the rheostat turn and TPS would stay in idle position.
His car had power after that - but he never did the piston rings and burned a quart of oil a day!

success, i did that and it sounds a lot better. i don't have a timing light, so ill have to use my friends, so i can't go rod it until then, but at idle and small revs it sounds a LOT better, thanks guys....... :biggrinbo group hug
