So i just bought a 88 7m-gte supra and when started for the first time out of the day it wont idial. I have to keep it above 1000 rpm's until it heats up. once it heats up it runs awsome. The car also blows a little black smoke out when i gun it. Im assuming its running rich. Also the car has the wastegate shimmed so the turbo runs past 8psi but i cant tell what it runs after that. im guessing something like 13 or that was what i was told.

Ok heres my other Q.. I have on the car the shimmed waste gate 13psi + or -, Full exhaust with d pipe and catback, and spearco intercooler. Should i expect a difference with a intake cone and bigger IC piping. And also i have a guy doing the piping for me what size should i go 2.5?

First off, you will be harassed by the loving old schoolers here for not using the search feature to check on these very well covered topics. Most of this is readily available info.

Intercooler piping, 2.5 is fine for everything you will throw at it with a stock car....same for the spearco intercooler anything under 450-500bhp and its fine. PVC pipe is a great, cheap way to pipe your car.

The filter depends on what type you have but any reputable filter will yield a couple hp. Any difference you may feel would be from the lack of expansion of the intercooler piping under boost and the increase in flow from the filter (maybe 15hp total or so)

The idle problem and likely the black smoke could be an air leak, under boost you lose air and the extra fuel causes the smoke, at idle the extra air screws with the idle air control motor. Since it has coolant running throughit, it may by some chance begin controlling idle better when the car warms up. That doesnt necessarily fit the problem exactly but the first thing I'd do is check all the rubber and plastic intercooler piping for leaks or cracks. Also it is possible that there are too distictly different problems (bad Idle control motor AND a boost leak)

Shimming a wastegate isnt the best way to control boost and 13 psi is very near fuel cut off (FCO). A manual boost controller is a cheap way to change boost and i would suggest at least a $20-$30 boost gauge from Pep Boys or Autozone (Summit racing if you want to order one). The gauge will help you estimate your boost better than "well its left the 8 mark on the stock guage so i guess its around 11."

Just my $0.02

Well g thanks for the hole shpeal on researching and old school thing, thats why i asked.... But um yea any way i am a person that is just begining this hole supra thing, thanks for the support BRO!!!

Well any way thanks for info so ill say a little more. I noticed when i was buying the car the intercoller tubing was jerry rigged. I noticed that one of the IC pipes was taped as if it had a crack or whatever. That would also be the first thing to fix by replacing th ic piping. I figured more air would make up for that extra fuel(black smoke) coming out the back would help.

Ok and the Shimed wastegate "the cheap way" i know isnt the right way. I heard to shim it is you use washiers on it. I planned to take whatever off so i can use the manual boost controller but i dont no what to look for. I no what the wastegat is but maybe someone can tell me what exactly to look for or take apart.

P.S. People like you guys are the ones that are keeping supra alive.

This will become your best friend:
http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/

And the wastegate shims, I would personally take those off as soon as possible. The wastegate shims are simply some washers between the turbo and the actuator on the two bolts in this diagram:
http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/manual.aspx?Section=TC&Page=2
You might have to take off the intake box to get to it, but maybe not. Just unbolt the two bolts that hold the "actuator" to the turbo. There shouldn't be any washers between the turbo and the actuator (should go: turbo | actuator | washer+bolt).

Like stated above: remove shims, check out the IC pipes very close for leaks, and get a boost gauge if you plan on upping it.

Also, is your car throwing any codes / engine light on?

Edit again:
Some more general tech tip stuff for the supra (useful for engine codes etc.):

Wow, you changed your mind really fast...I don't think anything anyone said in this thread was in the least bit jerky... and I certainly didn't say anything that offended you did I? Everyone in this thread has helped you a lot...I seriously don't know what you're talking about.

If you are considering getting a new intercooler, bigaaron, co-owner of driftmotion.com, and a dedicated member on here, has this intercooler for sale: http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19123

It's pretty much the same as any ebay IC and has been proven to be just as good as any name brand intercooler. Read through that intire thread I linked up above (it's not long) and you will see on the second page that he offers a full kit that includes: 3 or 4 ply (can't remember which) silicon couplers, t-bolt clamps (the best out there, don't get worm clamps), universal IC piping (2.5" is the way to go as it matches the inlets and outlets of the IC) which has pleny of links to pictures on people's different setups (go through the stock intake snorkel hole for better HP and reduced piping, detailed pictures cover this), the IC (of course), and universal mounting brackets (there are also detailed pictures showing where to mount the new IC and what needs to be done to make it work). All of that he sells for right at 600.00 bucks, that's a killer deal. I challenge you to find a similar setup with his dedicated service and quality parts that he offers ;).

I also noticed that you said there is a full exhaust on the car. Is it 3"? What does the down pipe look like exactly? Test pipe or cat? If the down pipe is one that bolts up to the stock turbo elbow, throw it away (or sell it on here ;)) and get a DP with an integrated elbow on it. One of the worst restrictions on our supras is the stock turbo elbow.

I also agree with getting the wastegate shims off there. You can make tons of power off of a relatively cheap, well made MBC. There are people on here using them and making over 400 HP.

You are looking for friendly supra owners? Well if I were you, i'd apologize very quickly for what you said. Not one thing said in this thread was said out of sarcasm. The first poster mentioned that you should have searched, but went and helped you anyway. The 'old school guys', the ones that take expensive time out of their lives to answer our question simply because they like the challenge, do not appreciate answering the same questions everytime a noob steps on board, hence the warnings about first using the search..

I ask questions on this forum, but expect nothing, I'm just grateful for what I do get, because in all fairness, what do the guys on the forum owe us? NOTHING! But thanks to them, we can diy our supras, get good deals on parts.

Peace,
Delmer.

Hmmm...
Well to answer your question first question. The "won't idle when cold" problem is usualy the TCCS coolent temp sensor, or THW sensor. When the cicuit is open, (sensor disconnected) the ecu reverts to a base coolant temperature of ~170 deg f. Until the coolant temp is actually that hot, the car will run like a dog. This will not throw a code, so it's pretty tricky to figure out, but I've seen it happen many times. The sensor is on the side of the thermostat housing and has two wires going to it. These connectors usually get brittle from being on the exhaust side of the engine and break quite often. An easy fix is to put two femal spade connectors on the wires and plug them directly into the sensor. Once the TCCS has a good temp signal, it can adjust the timing and fuel maps to make the car run when cold.
Hope this helps
