Preperation for a long trip

There is a video game tournament in Cincinatti, OH (About 4 and a half hours from where I live) and I'd like to go but driving my Supra up there is my only option. I'm kind of paranoid taking a car this old on such a long trip though. It also has quite a bit of miles (160K) Renting a car isn't an option since I'm only 17.

Either way if i decide to go, what should I do before I leave and what tools should I bring with me?

5qt Oil, 5qt Coolant, JB weld, and keep your eyes on your oil pressure and coolant temp gauges. I also carry spare -10 AN oil lines, nylon oil pressure gauge hose/fittings, fuses, teflon tape, zip ties, duct tape, paper towels, and metric tools in the trunk. I sometimes think about adding a spare 7M in the trunk for safe measure.

Lol at spare 7m.

If you are confident in the maintenance of your car, and not in denial about BHG, you should be fine. Happy gaming.

Bring some coolant, at least.

Heh, in daily driving, I keep my tools, and spare oil/coolant/brake fluid for potential top offs when getting gas. For a road trip though, I'm usually halfway prepared to swap an engine out. :p

However, my roadtrips are usually 8 hour one way minimum, so... as the old saying goes, "your mileage may vary" haha. Tip for ya though, if you happen to have a 21mm 6 point socket and a half inch ratchet, scissor jacks really aren't that slow. ;)

Video game tournament! couldn't you just play through online and save yourself the trip and gas money? Most online tournaments are held online now and days like "call of duty".

Some times all the prep in the world wont help, Thats because what ever your prepared for,... that won't be the problem. Worried?... take the train or don't go.

Oh don't forget to take a beer or two, enjoy when your car if/ when your car breaks. (ooop's sorry your under age) I don't mean to sound like an ass, so I'll apologize fright now,. good luck have fun

If your car is not having any problems now, just enjoy the ride, don't worry about it. but make sure you have enough money to get home just in case. prepare your self that way.:biglaugh:

Brake fluid? why if your losing brake fluid then, I'd say you have a problem.

I drove my 89 to texas from ohio and back, a 1400 mile round trip.. twice and all was well. Just make sure you kept up with your critical maintenance.

All you need is a hot chick to flag you down a ride when she breaks.

And if there only ends up being room for her........I hope you'll be wearing comfortable shoes.

All joking aside, I take a Quart of oil (especially because what I run is available everywhere), a Gallon of water, Duct Tape, Vise Grips, a couple screw drivers, gloves, and a standard metric set of tools.

Remember! You can just about rebuild an entire 7M with an 8, 10, 12, and 14mm socket set! ;)

Before I move to Orlando (3-4hrs) I'll be doing the following for both mileage and my safety:

-Checking all fluids & possibly oil change
-Changing spark plugs
-Checking all vac lines, coolant lines, and similar for loose connections
-Checking tire pressure

And on the daily, I drive with a small toolbox in my trunk that has everything I could possibly need when I break down. This includes a metric socket set, some wrenches, some screwdrivers, zip ties, pliers, cutters, rags, etc.

Most importantly, a cell phone!

Good luck man.

I usually bring a handfull of metric tools, the jack and stuff... but really, I'd just call CAA if something happened that was catastrophic. I don't have a spare that can be used on the back... a front flat would be ok.

I drove my Supra last year through +40 degree C heat (that's 104 for you americans), at 12psi and spent a majority of the time at WOT. If that didn't break it, nothing will.

My advise, take it to the track, drive the ever loving shit out of it. I mean flog it real good... if you don't break it there, a long highway trip isn't going to hurt it at all. Obviously driving the shit out of a car doesn't involved trying to break it by mis-shifting or redlining it... I mean, row all the gears at WOT down the straight and keep the skinny pedal down.

Long drives are easy on cars... it's repeated short drives that kill them.

+1

A metric tool set and taxi money.
Everything else you can get anywhere cheap/free.

Hey, you never know, and I like to be prepared just in case. Have yet to have to add brake fluid to the brake cylinder, but my clutch has lost a bit of fluid somewhere along the line once in a great while. Used to be more common in my Mk2 for some reason, so I've made a habit of keeping it with me. :)

Kinda like a spare head gasket when I had a 7m...

Yeah, wtf Sumeet? Haha... you can't bring that into a conversation and not expect demand for an explanation...
