Meh... I've heard a lot of people badmouthing Vista, but I have yet to find people who have had real problems.

I've been using Vista since it's release without a single problem.

Mind you, I also have XP on another 8 systems and Linux on 2 more...

I'm using Win 7 right now and I LOVE IT! and people bash vista because its a bloated piece of software.
The thing I can't understand is the whole upgrade, 299 for the full version but only 99 if I upgrade with XP? Is the Upgrade disk going to be a standalone or is it going to need me to install over XP each time and how many times can I reinstall. Just doesn't makes sense to sell an "upgrade" so cheap, but the full version is normal price.

Vista 64bit is WORLDS better (and more stable) than 32bit. Compare the people that like Vista (usually running 64bit) vs the people that hate it (32bit users)

Seriously, though - XP Compatibility Mode? I call that Wine. ;) Fedora 10 here on the server, Fedora 11 on the laptop, and Ubuntu 9.04 on my other desktop.

Laura's running XP, that's it. :) Linux > Windows, sorry.

It looks like you will need to show you own a copy of XP or Vista before the upgrade

From the Microsoft store website:

* Running Windows Vista?
* If you have Windows Vista, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. You can do a clean install (back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications) or an in-place upgrade (Windows 7 installs over Windows Vista).

* Running earlier versions?
* If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. But you must back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications.

_______

I will say that I did clean installs of XP Professional, Vista, and Win7 on a laptop that has 1gig of ram and a 2.2 mobile celeron cpu. The XP OS ran fine, the Vista OS was slow and the driver installs were a bitch. The Win 7 OS loaded and found all the drivers with no issues. Win 7 feels just as fast or faster than XP.
Windows 7 @ a price of $49.00 with a disk in hand seems like a good deal even if you just resell it on eBay. Hell my kids Wii games cost $46.00...

I skipped vista and made the switch from XP to Windows 7 Beta to RC. I think Windows 7 kicks ass plain and simple. Everything is just over all easier or smarter. It's also nice that I don't have to download an extra program to share all my media to my PS3. I will probably wait till my RC expires though and maybe even buy a copy of windows for once who knows.
