Power Steeing fluid leak from boot

Hey guys I noticed my PS fluid seems to be disappearing and I noticed today that my LF rack boot is full of fluid. Does this mean I need a new rack?

*edit* If so I am going to assume that RHD rack is a much different part than for a LHD car, would that be correct?

Sounds like your seals are toast in your rack. You might be able to buy a re-seal kit but I don't know where or if they are available. And yes a RHD rack is much different and no where near compatible with LHD rack.

Maybe you can try driftmotion or co. deals with buying clip from japan. People that buying clip to do swaps probably not using it. Try to contact them.

I just replaced the brass washers on mine to stop the leak. With it leaking there, it looked like it was leaking from one of the boots or shaft because it just leaking all over the place down there. Make sure that's not all you have to do before replacing a bunch of other stuff.

I've got an 89+ (LHD) rack rebuild kit if you want (I just ended up buying a new rack instead of going through the trouble of rebuilding)

All 3 of the Toyotas I've owned have had this problem. The culprit was power steering fluid used instead of ATF. I wish people wouldve checked the cap...

Does flushing the system with ATF fix it or new rack?


isnms, I pulled the clamp off the boot and a bunch of fluid came out. Thanks for the idea and detailed pics though!

Mine was seeping, and I put some Valvoline ATF with seal conditioners in the system, and it has yet to leak again. I thought it would just be a temporary fix, but two years has gone by, and its still not leaking...

My boots are torn, leaking out the pass-side... no telling how long its been like that.

I might as well get a new rack. They're not bad... $200 with the core trade-in at Napa.

Depends on how long its been in there. Pretty sure PS fluid eats the seals away slowly over time, but I cant give an estimate on how long.

Sorry to revive this thread but, in order to prevent redundancy I have a question on the same lines.

My car seems to have similar problems with the same kind of things that are mentioned here. I'll admit that I didn't place much thought into the recomendations on the cap of the power steering res. and filled it with normal power steering fluid. Stupid, I know. It will work fine for a few days or until I really run the car and then, when I check the level of fluid, it will be empty. Could this be directly related to running power steering fluid and could this be remedied with just running ATF through the system without draining the lines? If not is there a particular place I need to open to drain out all of the fluid from the lines before I fill it with ATF?

I would follow the tsrm guidelines on changing the fluid. Use some ATF with seal conditioners like Johnathan1 did and prey that that fixes it. If not then you should replace whatever is leaking like crazy.

If you don't own a TSRM, well shame on you(you should go buy one at a Toyota dealer), but otherwise just google tsrm. It will be the first hit.

Flush the system and add back synthetic fluid and seal swell then hope for the best. While you have it apart install a Magnefine filter in the return line below the AFM:
