Powder Coating

I got two questions about powder coating.

Is it possible to powder coat things in the engine bay such as valve covers?

And

How much should I expect to pay for powder coating? Such as how much for a rim and how much for miscellaneous things under the hood?

Hey,
powdercoating valve covers is definitly ok! MANY people do it. I myself will do them black and have the raised lines blue, some also polish them and chrome them. From what I hear it's not too expensive. On another post I believe someone said you could have a wheel done for cheapest around $20. Go down to the shop and ask them.

Yes on that.

All depends on where you go really, it varies. I can only tell you how much motorcycle parts have cost me to powder coat :icon_razz

Just don't powder coat things that get too hot, or it will burn off.

powder coating is great for things that don't get over 300 degrees of so, as they bake it at about that much,

the more things you coat one color, generally the cheaper per peice...

Few powdercoated things.
Works great for stuff like this, but don't coat your exhaust parts. :) (With powdercoat that is, thermal coatings is fine.)

This engine is coated black with a thermal dispersant, and the red stuff is candyapple red with clear coat powdercoating.

When I searched around locally for places who could powder coat, the average price for the valve covers was between $40 and $50.

Isn't that true about everything in life? I can get free blow jobs from.....oh wait, this is about paint.

Powdercoat will not work on the exhaust close to the engine, as already stated.

Has anyone tried hard annodizing these parts? I remember being huge into paintball where everything was annodized... that one comapny used type 3 hard anno and it seemed nearly indestructable to scratching and abrasion. I don't know about what metals can be annodized if any other then aluminum. Also it can mainly only be done in grey, black, and very dark green because of how its done.

i was under the impresion that anodizing was for aluminum and other soft alloys, but i really don't know for certain

anyone know for sure.....anyone know prices or where this could be done. it is true though anyone into paintballing knows how cool and colorful and rugid anodizing is

I'd like to chime in here and ask if there is any prep work involved in powdercoating? I have some valve covers that I started to polish but have decided to go with a black or red color and was wondering if I need to get these down to a certain finish before getting the powdercoat?

Ideally, powder coat just as all finishes I am thinking of right now are supposed to go on a somewhat scuffed up surface so it can "bite."
I think they may be able to sandblast/beadblast them to achieve such a finish as well.
I sanded my bike's rims and my engine cases by hand before powder coating them.
I think that 220 may be ideal. Keep in mind that the powder coat is much thicker than spray paint (which needs about 600 before color).

I had my MKIV wheels powder coated and it cost me 60 bucks a wheel for sandblasting and coating. Alot cheaper than I thought it would be. I am probably gonna have my valve covers done too and when I get some hardpipes those too. Powdercoating is sweet!

most powdercoating places sandblast as part of the work, they prep and coat......mainly so they don't get some dope that dosn't know the difference between 220 grit and cheese cloth

either way powdercoating is cheap for the protection and beauty it provides
