The other day I just finished putting the motor back in following a rear main seal and headgasket replacement.

After finally getting the timing right and getting the car to purr like a kitten I noticed a lot of steamy exhaust. I began to worry. I then took it for a drive and it ran good, despite a massive boost leak. After pulling back into the driveway and fanning all the smoke from the oily exhaust pipe away, I took the oil cap off and found this:

Like I stated in my build up thread, I almost threw up and set the car on fire. I cleaned out the cap real good and drove it again. I got back and there was traces of the same stuff. I cleaned it again and then let it sit and idle for about 15-20 minutes. The steamy exhaust went away after the first drive. I again checked the oil cap and there was none of that residue there this time.

The reason for this thread is that I'm looking for some reassurance and for someone to back up my theories. :x:

Steamy exhaust: It did not stink of antifreeze like I've smelt before when the 89 n/a blew it's HG. The exhaust had been open for over a month, and the day this happened it was very cool and humid/rainy. I'm thinking that was the most likely cause.

Residue on oil cap: My theory on this is all the assembly lube the machine shop put on the cams. There was a lot, especially on the lobes. The residue on the cap was the same color as the lube. I checked the oil several times and it remained crystal clear. The car did not overheat or try to boil over the entire time I let it idle or even during the short distances I drove it. The engine never missed one time as well.

Does any of that sound like logical reasons?

BTW: Stock 7MGTE with stock HG replacement. Head machined, pressure tested, new guides. ARP bolts torqued down to about 82lbs. I misread my torque wrench and thought I was on 72. (I'm a dumbass I know).

Doesn't look like the brown emulsification from a BHG to me ;)

Steam out of the exhaust on a cold, humid day is normal too...one of the major byproducts from combustion is water vapor anyway.

You planning on changing the oil/filter in the near future?

I figured it was just from the humidity but I'm very skiddish.:biglaugh:

...and yes. I do plan on changing the oil and filter soon. A chunk of my hotpipe broke off and after I get that fixed I can drive it and I figured I'd make a couple more laps down the street and then change it. I'm thinking of using Amsoil 5w-30 with either a Wix or Amsoil filter.

Just so long your going to use Amsoil ASL vs XL. ;)
The Amsoil Ea filters are pretty damn good, just expensive for my taste.

i wouldn't worry about it for now. that residue usually won't build up in a matter of minutes. its more like a matter of months. i know the feeling though. right after i fixed my hg i was always checking my oil/coolent like crazy. just waiting for the moment it starts to drop. just part of the game with the old 7m. sounds like you did things right, so it should hold up for a while.

and btw my arp bolts are at 85ftlbs so the torque thing shouldn't be an issue.

oh yeah, don't forget to retorque them.

Cooleeze Hotpipe FTW!

My car did a good bit of steaming after my exhaust was open (covered by the hood) for about a year. It didn't take too long for that to clear up. I bought a $35 compression tester, and the straight 165's made me sleep like a baby.
