Recently swapped the head gasket on my 87 turbo. Car started up on the first try but seems to be misfiring. Checked and rechecked the cam gears and cant seem to get it close to being timed. When a timing light is hooked up the mark on the crank pulley is pretty far to the left of the numbers on the block, you can get them somewhat closer together by moving the cam sensor but they are still at least an inch or so away from the first mark. Any suggestions on setting the cams/crank correctly without tearing everything apart? The misfiring seems to lessen the closer it is moved to the timing marks so we are assuming that is the problem. The second issue is that the stock water temp gauge no longer works, checked the wiring on the plug (2 pin on housing in front of cam sensor, right?) and it seems good but nothing is goin on. Would really like to get the car up and running without having to spend more on a water temp gauge.

deffinetly will try that this evening following that diagram. It seems like everything is staying lined up at TDC both the crank and tha cam gears when we get it all together and turn it over but with the timing light it is obviously off so if the cps was slightly off would that cause the timing to be off that far even though everything else seems to line up?

It would.
the crank and cam gears must line up, if you install the cps in the wron position it will definatly display the symptoms that you discribe.
