i have a popping sound while i'm turning at slow or fast speeds. Tried searching but couldn't find much. I was thinking lower ball joints but maybe tie rod ends, what are some checks i can do to find out for sure what it is?

to check ball joints, jack up the car so the side in question is in the air(lower ball joint unloaded), then grab the tire at 3 and 9 and shake it back and forth, if it has looseness to it, replace ball joints. Also check to make sure all nuts and bolts under there are tight... like the control arm and such

first off, is it comming from the front or rear?
yup,is coming from back there? if it is,one of your cv joints on the axle shaft is failing. when you get time juck up the rear end off the grond and manhandle the wheel and rock it back and forth to see if there is ant clattering or movement.
if not,it might be a tie rod up front.

this is correct except your forgot one thing. you have to place a jackstand under the lower control arm to unload the lower ball joint. cars that thave the spring mounted ontop of the upper control arm will have the ball joint unloaded when the car is in the air(like the old 'stangs for example). but with the spring mounted on the lower control arm like in the mkiii you have to unload the ball joint with the jackstand. and then yeah check 3 and 9 and 6 and 12.

thanks for the replies and links guys!

But the problem isn't limited to turning one way and it doesn't occur at full lock. It happens with any amount of steering movement and sometimes even when I'm accelerating and braking. I'm going to get some ball joints anyways, but does anyone know how to check tie rods?

edit: I just went ahead and ordered ball joints and tie rod ends, so I'll let you all know how it turns out...

FYI tirod ends are checked in the same way as ball joints. try to wiggle the tire back and forth(3 and 9). then look for the sorce of the movement. you might even be able to grap ahold of the tierod and wiggle it and see which is the troublesome joint.
