In the time that ive had my 90 turbo, its been making an odd sound from the engine. This sound is prominent around 3k+ rpm but havent (and dont currently plan on finding out) how big that + should be.

It sounds like air popping/clicking out of the engine. I wanna relate it to the blown head gasket just to make me feel good for now but if anyone has had this problem, any info would be nice. I saw a past thread stating that it may be exhaust manifold related.

I dont mind now, and im plannin on a new HG but id like to know if i have to dig any further when i do this. It came to mind when i had to move it this weekend. And on start-up it takes a long time to build up compression. Another thin too is that while this was going on (even now im sure) it idles perfectly. (odd??)

Any :1zhelp: would be appriciated,
Drew

You can do some tests that might help. try a compression test or even a leak down test. The head will most likely have the valves vacuum tested when you go to do the headgasket and you can even have it pressure tested for a little extra $ to make sure its not cracked. Unfortunately Im not familiar with the sound you are talking about but I do know from experience that it sure does suck to do alot of work like removing and installing a head only to find out the origional problem is still there.

hmmm yeh, i think its the exhaust manifold. I tried to listen while a friend revved it a little and it seemed to be from the back right side, right behind the turbo near the head.. :icon_bigg

lol so that must be it. Plus it seems to echo through the exhaust too. And it also seems to come around most when you put load on it... out going pressure? Anyway im sure its not form the block and most likely not from the head so im happy for now. Ill have to wait and see.

Thanks much,
Drew

this is where a mechanics stethescope would be handy.if you dont have access to one you can make a makeshift one.take piece of hose (heater hose/garden hose) about 3-4' long and hold one end to your ear and the other end around where you think the noise is coming from. youll know it when you find the area in question
