Plugging the floorboard (?)

No better time than the holidays for starting a new supra project!

Yesterday I ripped out most of my interior. I'm not bored - I just received my new carpet kit. The old carpet suffered from a large dark (black?) stain that covered half the passenger side, from the back seat all the way under the entire passenger front seat. I don't want this to happen again. I thought the source was the wiper fluid line running along the passenger kick panel. But, the hose looks very good. Using my flashlight, I noticed alot of holes in the floorboard. Perhaps they should be plugged, perhaps they are for drainage. Can't find a reference to them in TSRM or on here. Perhaps someone can shed some light. Here are pics:

Ok, these are the goodies that I found under the carpet. I can only claim a few of them (notably the skittle and the sonic mint).

This is PS rear floorboard:

This is PS front floorboard EDIT: only the tiny hole is open to the ground, other two are not:

All the holes marked with arrows are open to the ground.

Last, isn't this hole used for the DS seat belt?? My seat belt clips directly to the seat. However, this interior was not original in this car, so perhaps that explains the discrepency:

Anyways, I'm trying not to ruin my new carpet. Any help on what to plug or any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Holes in the First pictures(p/s Rear) could have been for a CD multi changer, plug them!(small ones) the bigger ones no Idea without looking at my floor, but they are not needed either bung them with a rubber grommet.

The same at the front! none needed,

the hole in the trans tunnel is for a guide that holes the factory belt stalk in place when you slide the seat forward. no biggie if its missing!

hope this helps

Someone removed the sound detening stuff. its usually matching white where it is now gray because someone took it out to save weight most likely. When the sound stuff in normally there the holes are covered. When I took all my sound stuff out I RTV'ed all the holes. So to answer your question they are all supposted to be plugged exept for the one behind the center console which is the threaded hole for your front seat belt slider

You need the seatbelt slide, it's necessary!

In an accident it's how your seatbelt is mounted to the chassis, without it it's mounted just to the chair and it's not meant to take the stress!

I agree with the fact that most of those holes are covered by the insulation (sound and heat) that is supposed to be in those darker spots on the floor...

Just match whatever holes are used for what you took out. If they aren't needed just plug them up securely. Anything intended for drainage, (or if you want to use them for that) have something removable usually, not just left open. Otherwise water goes in from there. Like those big ones in the back seat.

Insulation came out when I pulled the carpet out. RTV works well on these holes? I've been trying to find rubber plugs and have not had much luck!! All I find are rubber grommets with holes in the center. I would think a solid rubber grommet would outlast the RTV..

I will get a seat belt mount for DS when I pick up the replacement seats. I still think the holes were originally plugged, how else do you keep the insulation from getting wet..?

You can get blanking grommets Tracy, I use em to make exact fit grommets and punch the hole the size I need.

Apparently not in this state. I ended up with a large variety of black rubber corks. Gives me an excuse to use my hammer ;)

On the newer Toyota's in the parts catalog, there is a "body plug chart". If you would like, I can scan it tomorrow and e-mail it to you. It has sizes in mm, as well as part #'s you can take to your local dealer if you'd like and order them.

Are you in a rush to finish it?

If so Coins and RTV work well if not measure your holes and I'll send you some blanks ;)

Why IJ, you almost made me blush!

Thanks for all the ideas, but the black rubber corks are working out. They come in a variety of sizes. If they stick up too far, I can take the scissors and cut them down to size. Plus, they are easy to remove.

I've got the car torn apart, so I'm eager to get it back together while I can still remember where everything goes. Plus, the project is taking up the entire garage, so the altima is stuck out in the snow this evening.

The floor is supposed to have what basicly is tar stuck in those dark spots, insulation over it all, and then the carpet.

The tar is a noise insulator (dampener) like dynamat.
