Plug in harness to TPS and...?

Ok

So I have a new FFIM and extended the harness to the TPS about 1 foot. I taped it all up really well, and soldered the connections. I did use bigger wire, I think it was like 14 guage? Anyways, when the TPS isn't plugged in the car revs fine; holds idle fine (about 900) and is very driveable like this. However, when I plug in the harness to the TPS; if I rev anything over 1500 and try to hold the RPM's there, it revs and drops, revs and drops on it's own...

At any RPM higher than 1500 this happens when the TPS is plugged in. When the harness isn't plugged in like I said the car runs beautifully; except for the massive fuel dumpage =x

Someone suggested a new TPS; but this one is only about 1 year old... I don't have the time to swap out to different TPS's since I don't have any to swap out too..

Anyone know what could be causing this? Maybe my solders sucked dick(i thought they were pretty damn good) or I didn't tape the wires up enough and the sound is interfering with the signal?

Any suggestions from someone who had the same or similar problems and has fixed it now?

Thanks,
Kyle Ackerman

I would do it over again, and use heat shrink, not tape.

Sweep the meter. You need a DSO.

And do what FTW(Joel W) said, pull codes.

Well; I didn't want to pull codes because I'm sure there is more than one... But; I'll go pull codes now and see what I get.

And when you say "sweep the metere. You need a DSO." What is that?

If it can't be resolved by simple means; then I will re-do the soldering and use heat shrink and smaller guage wire so it's easier to make a solid connection.

OKOK.

I went and plugged everything in; reset the ECU and started it up.

I let it idle and then revved it and held it @ 2k RPM's and it did the thing..

It's almost like it drops and studders; and then revs back up again

Then I turned the car off and checked codes: 41

So you are right; but code 41 is?

Code 41 is a bad TPS or the TPS connections on the potentiometer side of the TPS are bad or the wire too and from the TPS and ECU are not making a connection.(VTA and VC)

In your case I would look at the wires (VTA and VC) like Nick said., then the TPS itself.

Ok; so then I will re-solder my connections and see what I can come up with.

Hopefully something better than vrrooommm buh buh buh buh vrooom buh buh buh buh

Would it cause a malfunction if I sort of banged on the TPS? ei: i made a gasket for it since I had to make the imprint on the gasket sheet I used a hammer to indent it... Would this cause it to break?

Thanks,

A DSO in short is a hand held scope that displays voltage over time. The TPS creates a signal that ECU uses and determines throttle angle.

To sweep it means to probe the signal wire and depress the pedal to the floor in a steady motion in about 1 second and look at the pattern.

Ok... So I resoldered and heat shrinked everything; and then over the 4 wires I heat shrinked it again with one big heat shrink. Reset the ECU; started it up with the TPS hooked up and everything plugged in..

Moment of truth: At 1500 RPM's the car does the revving and falling.

I'm so pissed.. Just spent like 3 hours unsoldering all of the wires; resoldering in a smaller guage wire and heat shrinking everything.

So now my question is... Do all of the wires need to be wrapped up? I have the heat shrink over the 4 connections but about 9 inches of the wire from each of the 4 is just sort of snug on the intake manifold.. Should I put a good think layer of tape on the wires so that there is no chance of noise or is that going to make a difference?

So what is my next step?

I checked it with another TPS that I had and it does the same thing.....

Oh; I'm not sure if this matters or not for this certain problem but I may have a slight leak in the hose which goes to my stock FPR.

Could this play a role? I dont have a clip that is small enough to keep it tight..

rofl; trust me my solders are legit; as well as the heat shrink.

I'd post the pictures I took and video; but I got it to work.

It seems that the holes which were drilled into the TPS mount weren't correct, and when I tried to adjust the tps it still didn't sit turned far enough clockwise; like how the stock one is.

So, I drilled out new holes, approx. 1/2 inch below the old hole on the right side and a 1/2 above the old hole on the left side; bolted that bitch on; adjusted it properly, and no more code 41 and no more crazy idle surging over 1500 RPMs.

Teeheeeee; I'm so excited.

Just goes to show you; custom setups are a pain in the ass.
