Ok, sad story because I spend freaking over 6 months researching and acquiring all the parts I need to swap my 1jz and I finally got it to run yesterday. I am seriously about to cry cause all that hard work, time, and money just to drive it for one day. I just got pull over 20 minutes ago for my loud exhaust (3.3" Blitz NUR). He pop my hood and ask me to identify or show him carb numbers. I told him everything is stock just that the pipes are aluminum. He wrote me a state referee fixing ticket. That means I have to state ref it. I need suggestion or advice. Has anyone past California strict state ref with a 1jz before. I would just rather bar the car with the 1jz if I could, but the 1jz don't have EGR so there's no way it would pass. Other options is to swap a 7mgte motor back but I cut my 7mgte harness, my 7mgte motor had a rod know that's why I swap it in the first place.

I am now left with no money, no way to put back the 7mgte motor. Is it true that they stop doing the emission test, it's just visual and as long as you have all the right stuff for emission on then they'll just bar it? Please help me, I don't want to sell my baby...:cry::cry::cry:

I've read up on some forums and people claiming that a standalone got them to pass the test. I don't know if it's true. But like you said, your out of money.

Does anyone know if I could just pay the bill without correction and run the stock muffler to avoid getting pull over until I get a 3" exhaust that is not too loud? If the bail is just 300 or less, I am just thinking about paying the bail but I just post up the car on craigslist right now just testing if I get a buyer but damn I don't want to sell the car.

I am not worry about smog because I could get someone to do that for me but the inspection is what I am worry about. Like the visual inspection at state referee.

sorry to break this news to you...but you wont pass a state referee with a 1jz just because the motor was never available in the US.

the EASIEST/Cheapest way for you to somehow get back into cali spec would be to use a 2jz block, the entire 1jzgte head and turbos (they look close enough to usdm twins to most people that you wont have problems) and usdm smog pieces (evap AND egr stuff HAS to be present) as well as a USDM 2jz-gte ecu.

you got pwned in the face with getting a state ref ticket right after swapping.

this is why im a 2jz fan, any iteration can be made smog compliant using usdm bits and pieces, not so for the 1jz.

one thing though, you COULD try, is to call your local ref station and talk to the tech. ccontact the BAR to get the number of your closest ref station.

Well, Here are my options at this point. I did some reading on the forums too and looks like the chance of getting a legal 1jz supra would be very slim to nothing.

Option 1 - Swap back a 7mgte and make it stock.
Question(s) - Do they stamp that 7mgte motor?
Only thing the cop point at was my aluminum intercooler pipe.

Option 2 - Thinking of paying the fee without correction.
Q's - What is the cause of that? Do I still need to get it clear to re-register for the up coming year? BTW my regular smog is FEB 2010..
- Could I still run the car by just paying the fee?

Option 3 - Sell the car, don't want to but if no other options will have to.
Q's - Will they dismiss me if I just sell the car?

Anyways, which option should I take and anyone is welcome to throw me any suggestion or advice. I got till 1/11/2010 to get this taking care of...

LOL that way how the cop would know whats under that snow pile right?:biglaugh: anyway the problem is not 1jz vs. California like in many situations, its the exhaust that is too loud. cops are attracted like flies to a fresh pile of shit to loud exhaust and hondas with cardboard bodykits, its either pot or JDM engine, you have to keep it low key and no one is going to touch you. less rice more sleeper for daily driven jzs.

Bring a fat stack of $$ and bribe the guy. Or move to a neighboring state such as AZ or NV. It my understanding that you cannot sell a car in cali that doesnt meet their emissions and legality standards. If you sell it it has to be out of cali.

This isnt exactly legal, but you can get by this by finding a friend in a neighboring state and:
A Transfer the car to him and have it registered under his name.
B Change your legal address to his house. And reregister the car in his state. You can still live in cali but have AZ or NV plates (not legal). My buddy drove a truck registered in maine for 3 years while he lived here in MA.

I think the officer was asking for a C.A.R.B number for my Apexi air filter. To my understanding any after market parts that is 50 state legal have a C.A.R.B stamp or sticker. I use to have a Greddy C.A.R.B sticker on the charge pipe of my 94 GSR Turbo, that say: 1994 Integra GSR Turbo Kit. It as the C.A.R.B number from greddy that it's legal to run. I've gotten away from getting to pop my hood twice with it and my turbo kit is not all greddy...:evil2:

LOL...yeah, Cali suck for there strict emission. I just talk to one of my brother in law about state ref. he always gets it because of his motor swaps and modification..He told me if it doesn't pass and without EGR, it will never pass. For me to just pay the fine of 500 if it doesn't pass state ref requirements and make it look stock so no one pulls me over or it's another 500 for state ref again. Damn, it's like you have to have money to play... If I can't find a 7mgte to swap in for the state referee, I'll just pay the fee, much cheaper and sell my super loud Blitz NUR exhaust and get maybe like a Apexi exhaust, which my cousin has one on his 1990 supra and it's pretty quite untill full throttle but it's still pretty low on noise.

I heard Blitz NUR exhaust is around 93db's with the silencer. I was running my without the silencer, and i notice it get even louder with the 1jz motor than the 7m. Car sounds aggressive but like Pernilongo mention, loud exhaust attracts cops.

option 1 is honestly the best way, since once you're reffed and smogged (just drive around with a 7m for a month or two) you should be in the clear until your next smog date (barring you dont get reffed again).
plus, let's be honest, its easier to find a smog guy that doesnt know what he's doing and will smog your 1jz than it is a ref, since those guys are freaking hardcore most of the time. but because of furloughs, basically all the ref will do is make sure the engine is the right one for the car, or one that is allowed to be swapped, and that the big emissions/evap components are all there. again, call your local ref.

option 2 isnt really one since afaik you can't pay a fine as non-correctable if you've been given a ref citation.

option 3 just sucks.

ok, I've found my solution! My cousin (owns like three mkIII supra's) got one of his buddy to let me use his 7mgte motor. :icon_razz The catch is that I'll have to put it together, that 7mgte motor had a bad rod knock. But he has a good long block.(hopefully it's good as he says it is) All I need to do is assemble it all up and I could swap it in mine to do the state ref. After that, I could just pull it out and put my 1jz back on! :evil2: It's a win win for both of us. I get to keep my 1jz swap for as long as I don't get pull over again and his 7m motor is all ready to just drop into his car. Well, I got to do s**t load of work but I got till 1/11/2010 <--That's my court date....I should have plenty of time to get this done.

Thinking about all the stuff I have to do to my car to put back the 7mgte motor. I have to solder back my 7m alternator plug, put back my stock high pressure PS line, Put my PS cooler in the stock location, and miner stuff. Thank god, I didn't cut any of my body harness except for the alternator but that's easy to solder it back on.. Anyways, I think I could convert it back without much hassle.

I don't know about registering as "off road use" but I heard you could have a car register as "show car" legally, but what's the point if you can't drive it legally as a daily drive car.
