Well, my stock CT-26 went south, so I need new turbo.
One of the local turbo shops offers turbo rebuild and they say "we can build any turbo from garrett parts", so couldn't you explain me, what to do with stock CT-26 to handle 350-400 hp in the future?

I see, that 60-1 upgrade is popular enough, but what does it mean? Should I install different compressor wheel (what wheel, by the way?) or something more?

Thanx a lot!

(+) means that there are some words in the message body
(-) means that all sense is in thread's topic, so that people see, if it is not interesting - he will not open the thread
This became my habbit although it is more applyable for structural message boards (not lists like supramania)...

Well; I believe they put in new wheels for both hot and cold side, there are a number of different sizes you can get starting from:

50 trim <-- said to be most reliable all though I have never heard of anyone getting this one... I would think it isn't much bigger then stock there fore flowing around 350hp @ 18-20 lbs
53 trim Slightly larger than above, at same boost levels probably 360-380
57 trim Again, slightly larger than the above, and @ same boost levels 380-400 probably?
60 trim Some people say anything bigger than 60 trim cuts turbo life down drastically, 60 trim on compressor graphs shows that is flows way more than any of the other 'trim' compressors. Should flow about 400-430 @ above mentioned boost levels.
60-1 Is a compressor wheel from a to4e something or other and many say to big for the stock ct shaft, flows very well though @ about 450 HP...
62-1 is a compressor wheel from another to4d or something turbo, again many say not very reliable. Should flow to about 470ish HP...

Again, this is info is only what I have gathered from reading countless posts on upgrading the CT. I in no way garauntee you will hit those HP figures as I don't know what mods you have on your car and have not tested any of them myself.

However, a member on here sells his own re-built turbos with 62-1 and has his own way of modifying the shaft/wheels to make them last longer. He ran low 11's @ the track @ 25 psi if I remember correctly which is better than most supras running major custom setups with thousands invested, and he will guarantee his turbo if it fails because of his rebuild.....

BigArron has made 370rwhp on a 50trim ct. Personally I am going with a 54 or 57 trim trim.

disced - the hp numbers you listed look appropriate for a flywheel hp rating, but realistically, I think the most REAR WHEEL power anybody is going to get out of a ct upgrade is ~400 without nitrous and thats with a serious tune. The ct housing is simply too restrictive.

MR. Y - I think that your power goals are definately attainable, but you may want to consider going with a SP61GT bolt on or even the BOSS 550 from suprasport.com if you want a RELIABLE 400 hp that bolts on. These larger turbos will give you a colder charge. I would place the limits of reliability with a CT upgrade at 350-375 hp considering you have it tuned properly.

One option that ive been interested in seeing is if the garrett GT series wheels can be fit into the CT housing instead of the old t3/4 style. You might want to inquire about that.

Can't you tell his name, please? Or other contacts maybe...
Even though you specifically asked Disced, stevevangst is the member he described.
I have been meaning to get a hold of him myself -- that will be my last attempt.

Maybe when discussing reliability you are right about 400 being the most RWHP out of an upgraded CT, but I've seen plenty upgraded CT's over the 400 RWHP mark when tuned properly. As far as reliability goes, it seems to me to be a totally random thing. I've heard people say their upgraded CT has failed after a couple thousand miles, and then I've seen people run em for years. Hell I dunno, I went with an upgraded CT for the cost, at the time I couldnt afford $1000+ for a turbo kit.

It does appear that most of the 60 trim's and larger fail much quicker then the smaller sizes. I've got about 40k miles on my 57 trim, no excessive play or oil burning.

For the record, a CT-26 upgrade consists of boring out the intake side of the turbo and putting a larger wheel in there. The stock exhaust wheel is maintained or shaved slightly (if you get it clipped).

Hmm.. I thought they upgraded both of the wheels?

And for the person who says 400 HP on the upgraded CT is pushing its limits... SteveVangst ran low 11's no nitrous w/ drag radials on his own 62-1 which he says he has used for 3-4 years now without a second rebuild..

I'm not sure how fast you are supposed to run w/ a car that is full weight @ 400 HP.. Someone bring up that calculator for figuring out how fast you run @ the track with a certain amnt of HP...
