hey guys, i'm brand new here and I'm planning to go check out a 1990 Supra Turbo Targa Top tomorrow, and I was just wondering if you guys can help me out by telling me what I should and definetly check out on the car before I consider buying it, its going for about $3,500, they claim to have a clean title, and I spoke with the owner once, and she said that it has about 130k miles on it and everything else is in decent shape, no damages or anything at all, so can you guys just tell me what I need to inspect on the car tomorrow so I dont end up paying alot more to get everything else repaired and such? Thanks

...oh yeah...tomorrow is actually this afternoon, I forgot its 3:09AM already -__-

Well obviously anything you'd normally check on a car. Body/paint condition, tire wear, etc. Check that the electric antenna still goes up and down automatically. One thing I've noticed on my Supra and one that I've looked at is a leak around the bottom of the rear hatch window. You might be able to see if the seal has start to wear off. Check if the hatch and hood struts still hold up the hatch and hood on their own. Check for a white smoke coming out of the tailpipe. Check the coolant. Check for leaks under the car.

I like to pick over just about every square inch of a car when I'm looking to buy. If it's in good condition that's a good price. Good luck!

Alot of the stuff mentioned can be replaced fairly easy, but do watch out for white smoke. Listen for any knocking or pinging sounds while running. Drive it to make sure the car shifts smooth. Make sure it doesn't pull to one side alot while driving. See if it pulls to one side while stopping, just to see if the brake calipers are alright. Check the inside to see if the targa has been leaking if it is a targa top. Check oil pressure gauge and drive it while watching the temperature gauge. Look at the oil also to make sure their isnt water in it. You can take the oil cap off and look there to see if there is any discoloring in the oil. Just my two cents worth for free. Good luck.

Don't forget to do a carfax or ask some1 here with an account to do one for you. Honest people are hard to find nowadays.

Check the diagnostic codes when you are looking at it. There is a little box behind the battery that says "diagnostic" on it. Pop the top off it and look at the under-side of the cap. Then, using an paperclip bent into a horseshoe shape, jump the T and E1 terminals of the diag box. Go in side the car and turn the key to the "on" position but do NOT turn the engine over. Watch the CEL(Check Engine Light) and see how many times it blinks. If it is a steady blinking then there are no error codes. In order to read the code you have to count how many times the CEL blinks. E.G. Code 31= blink_blink_blink___blink.
