I have a 7mgte that i rebuilt. Im trying to start it but there nothing happening. It cranks with a couple putts here and there but no start. and when ever i take out the spark plugs and look down the hole, the pistons r wet. It not coolant, smells like gas but it like a thick layer on the pistons. Is this just flooding it or is something wrong? The car had about a half a tank of like 3 yr old gas. Someone at the auto store said instead of siphoning it out just put some new good gas and seafoam. So idk what is wrong with the car!!

NO seafoam!

If you're trying to get it to start for the first time since the rebuild, the problem is most likely.....drumroll.....

THE CPS is out of alignment!!!!

Yay- I got to say it again! Even if you think you've got it aligned perfectly, it may be off by one tooth.
OR, you may have the motor 180 degrees out of alignment with the cps. Are you sure you put it in on TDC of the compression stroke?

Lol @ supraguy...you have too much fun with that don't you? :icon_razz

While you've got the spark plugs out I'd just double check and make sure you're getting spark too.

ya im getting spark and the cps is timed correctly. ive researched it so many time, lol so i know its gotta be right... but ya i dnt know what else it could be is the seafoam to thick or something? cause that would kinda make sense cause the pistons have a thick gasoline layer... it smells like gas.. i stuck a string down there and soaked it, pulled it out and lit it with a lighter. It got on fire but it was a slow start up, burns like gas but it was slower to light and thicker... LOL idk i get a couple putts here and there. It sounds like a half fire up in a cylinder if that makes any sense... but i only get a couple and then it gets that puddle of gas stuff on the pistons...

Gas stuff?
It's either gas or it isn't. You'll know if its gas. take the efi fuse out and try cranking it.
That'll dry out the cylinders in a hurry, if it's indeed flooding.

Dont want to ruin your spark plugs that way either.

You sure your cam/ crank timing is correct?

well like i said it looks and smells like gas but its a little thicker. when i put a flame to it it slowly catches fire. idk im thinkin it might be the old gas or too much sea foam. It was about 3/4 tank of gas with full bottle of sea foam. That sound like to much?

One ounce of Seafoam is too much.
I keep hearing horror stories about seafoam.
Sounds to me like you might have coolant mixing into the cylinders.
no matter how old your gas might be, it shouldn't be 'thick'.

PS- stop setting fire to it.
put the spark plugs in, crank the engine with the efi fuse out.
If it's flooded, this will clear it. I belive you can also just do this by holding the pedal to the floor,
and the ecu will put it in clear-flood mode.

Three year old gas?

If it's been that long there is definitely condensation in the bottom of your tank. Gas losses its volatility over the span of a couple years.

and...

You should also know that old gas "varnishes" and gums up. Looks like you get to clean up a few things.

There's a drain plug in the bottom of the tank.
I think it's a square plug, perhaps a 1/2" ratchet will lock right in- I can't recall, though I've done it before.

After you drain it, put in a gallon or two of fresh stuff, jumper the fuel pump on the diag block, and let it run through the system to clean it out. Then drain that, too. Just be careful you don't let the pump run dry.

well the drain plug isnt a 1/2 in and its not a 3/8 drive either. So idk how im gunna be able to take that plug out. But is there a way i can like pull the fuel feed line off somewhere and point it in a bucket and let it run out somehow? The 1/2 was to big and the 3/8 was just a lil smaller.

But im thinking its gotta be the fact that there was 3 yr old gas + full bottle of sea foam thats keeping it from starting. Even though i put only 8 gallons or so of some new BP gas but still.
