Okay, I did my head gasket about 9 months ago, and I just got access to some of the pics I took during the repair (most got deleted). Here they are!

Here is a pic of the head after I got it back from the machine shop...notice the corrosion around the water jackets.

Here's a closeup of the erosion, pitting.

Sorry I don't have more, but I wanted to get the pics of the corrosion up to see what people think...I have been driving the car for about 9 months now, with no signs of BHG...

You have a square head haha. Isn't that called tapping not helicoiling? I'm not too sure. Looks good!

I noticed the the difference between n/a and turbo heads, that the n/a head has some bronze coating inside of it, were tubo head doesnt, does it mean anything?
Thanks

I would be more worried about the pitting on the surface of the head. The pitting/corrosion in the water channels should be ok so long as the HG sealed around them.

The bronze colored deposits could be from a number of things, but most likely someone used a pour-in radiator sealer to stop a leak. Worst case would be impeding heat transfer from the metal to the coolant, but I really wouldn't think it would be significant...maybe an engineer could chime in on this one ;)

Good move on helicoiling the exhaust studs...imo this is a great thing to do, especially when the head is off the car. Pretty much makes the exhaust manifold stay sealed to the haed with no worries about stripping.

What type of HG did you use to for the repair?

Heehee...that's how it's really done in a fighter squadron. It's not like on "Top Gun" where you get a cool call sign like "Maverick". It's usually because you screwed up and if you let it be known that don't like it...you just made sure it stuck ;)

Here's a couple of examples of real ones:

"Not-So"...his last name was Bright

"NTD"...the guy was a real ass, 1st name Nick...NTD was short for "Nick-the Dick"

"Divot"...good friend of mine. Got drunk in Kunsan and passed out on the golf course on the way back to his room. The security police found him and took him home...you gotta "replace the divots"

And just remember...experience and treachery will beat youth and raw skill every time ;)

its pretty much proven that any water leaking into the oil passages or oil pan screws the bearings pretty damn quick.

It happened to me and just about every supra owner local here in az that i can think of thats had a bad enough bhg.

IIRC Supracentral wrote a huuuge ass article on water and oil contamination etc.. all of which i didn't read... HOWEVER! i do know its true..

I've helicoiled two heads now, and finally figured out how easy it is to just change over to SAE sizes...

You still want the stainless inserts, but just get one that is slightly larger than the 10mm stock size, then you can use off the shelf stainless exhaust studs and locking nuts from places like ARP with little hassle, and cheaper prices...

Too bad I realized this AFTER I'm done with both heads.... Dang it. (But now you can take advantage of it for yourself.)

Only down side is you have to use SAE tools to tourqe down the exhaust manifold, but that is no big deal. (Most of us have both anyway.)

This is very true...coolant contamination will FUBAR your rod bearing in short order. However, that assumes the HG in this case did not seal properly. That is going to depend on the machine work, type HG, etc. Some of those coolant passages look pretty rough, but if the HG sealed around them then it should hold.

He said that there was no sign of a BHG...I would do the oil changes myself and look for coolant in the pan I use to drain it into.

i would also run several quarts of oil through without the car running top to bottom pour it in on the cam's.

Im talking if the HG blew previously before replacement it could of leaked into the oil passages.

well, when I bought the car, the block had already been rebuilt, because it had rod knock due to a BHG... then it BHG'd again, then i got it...so it has had AT LEAST 2 BHG's that I know of.

And the car isn't consuming any coolant, but I do get the occasional waterfall sound behind the dash, but that could be my heater core...and I just drove the car 80 miles doing 80MPH the whole way, and it was close to 110F degrees outside, with the air on...and the temp. guage would fluctuate slightly when going uphill, but it never overheated, the guage has never been in the red since the last HG repair. I looked in the manual while i was driving, and it said that everything below the red zone is normal...so I am guessing it is okay.

everything below the 3 o'clock position should be ok. if mine goes past that, the heater is on full blast and a secondary fan is kicked on!! (hotwired back up fan on a switch!!)
