Doing my own preparation, $2500.

Paying for prep, probably $5000-6000.

If you cheap out, you'll have to pay again to do it right, and it'll cost even more.

wow, i must get my paint cheap then....

a cheap color change job cost me $300 in paint and materials (that was cheaping out)

when i do it this time i won't, and the cost is still WAAAAY under a grand

BUT, if i had the cash, and i was gonna have a shop do it, $3000

it just seems silly considering i've barely spent that much on the entire car!!!

2-stage paint job here runs about $1500.00 just for material. A good paint job with the car being stripped would run at least $4k. I'm sure you could get a quick slap-on for a grand, but in a year, you'd want to kill yourself when you look at it. If you are going to keep the car, get a top-notch job, that's my take on it.

Hinesville/FT Stewart area. not too much here. got two quotes ranging from 3500 for same color to 6K for a change in color.

Atleast $1400 in materials. If you're paying for the prep and getting color sanding done between coats you're looking at atleast $4000 in labor. Don't forget you gotta strip the engine bay (pull the motor and tranny and all the other stuff in the engine bay), and remove the doors, all the glass and trim, the bumpers and hood. Not a quick or cheap process to say the least if you do it right. I paid only $1300 for my paint job (including materials and labor) and now I want to do it right and strip the car.

I've heard many people praise sprayglo. Also seen some of their paintjobs..Not too bad if you ask me. I wish there was one in my town.

By your logic Mac none of us should be putting on big singles and all the other stuff we do that cost more than the car is worth. Nothing wrong with repainting a Supra, it helps keep it look young. Besides, if you buy a sports car and expect to sell it as a whole for what you put into it you're smoking crack unless you got a good deal and didn't upgrade and such. Hell, a new set of tires for my old Geo cost $200 and the car was only worth $500, and if I sold it right after putting on new tires I couldn't raise the price $200 to cover the cost of the tires. Think about it. I don't know about ya'll, but if I sold my Supra I'd get back maybe 50% of what I put into it.

its like everything else wit this car, do it yourself and save a shitload of money. theres no way paint and materials alone should cost over a grand, even for red paint. so in paying 4 grand for a repaint, its over $3000 in labor.

sorry but i can't bring myself to pay that much, even to make the car look good. besides no matter where it gets painted or how good of a paintjob it is, its still gonna chip, get scratched, etc.

I take it you've never repainted a car before? Good paint isn't cheap, nor is good clear. If you want a high quality paint job, you will want to buy enough of both the base coat and the clear coat for 6-10 coats each. I say this only because a good paint job is color sanded between coats. Some parts need more coats than others. If you cheap out on the materials you will regret it later. Even if you have a paint booth and are a good painter and paint prepper, you will still spend atleast $1300 on materials alone.

have YOU ever painted a car?

6-10 coats each, is not only overkill, and a waste of paint, but completley unnecessary.

i've painted 2 cars, my neon and my supra.

neon was done for about $500 base/clear
and the supra was about $250 single stage (but full color change)

heres the neon, and paint is still un-cut (no wetsand/buff, not even between coats...)

done in my dirty ass garage.

it CAN be done. can everyone do it? of course not, but it can be done.

paint was done over a year ago, it sat in the snow all winter, and the paint still looks good with absolutely no chipping.

Last July-September actually. I paid $400 in paint materials (base coat, clear coat), 3 coats each. I did the 90% of the prep and had a local body shop mask and spray. They didn't sand between coats, no cut and buff yet, and I have chips in some spots, especially the front bumper and the rear skirt just in front of the rear tires.
