Hello all! Name's Eric, Bought an '89 turbo targa a year ago and my life will never be the same again. I recently received from on high the dreaded BHG on the engine that I had swapped in after spinning a bearing. So now I'm ripping this pig apart finding more gack than a peepshows floor, nummie. Tips and tricks for loving my head back to happiness are everywhere. But there are still some questions that lie before me. Before the little bastard bearing went ahead and ruined the start of a beautiful thing I went a little ebay happy. It happens. So begin the questions:
-I have 1mm o/s SS valves from engbldr(not ferrea), Are they worth installing, or did I blow the cash like a junkie needing a fix?
-The same guy has valve guides available should I replace these(which is obvious if there is play, I know, but I'm talking as a premptive strike against friction.
-How much machining should I be looking to do once the head is off?
-Where can I get a new accordian hose?
-What are the stock injectors REAlly good for? and is it worth it to send them out for servicing?
-Oh yeah, ebay, bought N/A cams. Was that as much of a waste as cheating on the girlfriend with an 18 and a 24 yo in a threesome. (Iknowshouldn't be hard to figure)
-MHG, Is there a need for them really expensive ones? Or is the $120 HKS from HRSPWRFRKS okay?
-Shims? Need 'em? get 'em where?
-Valve springs, retainers, yada yada, is stock good enough?
I know I'm a a bit long winded but after 5 years of doing underwater porn I have better lung capacity than LanceA. Thankyou for any help, or tips you can provide. More questions to follow, ERic

- Valves are certainly worth installing.
- I'd only replace the valve guides if they are needed.
- As much as required to get a mirror finish for your head gasket.
- Jay Marks Toyota sells new accordian hoses in rubber, or a few people make them in steel and sell them here in the misc. vendors section or on ebay.
- Stock 440cc injectors should be capable of providing about 400 rwhp if they are in good condition. It's worth getting them checked.
- N/A cams provide a difference... but it's so small it's not worth the effort.
- The $120 HKS unit from HPF is more than good enough.
- Shims can be had from Toyota (expensive), Yamaha (cheap), or any local machine shops (cheaper).
- Head hardware will be good enough unless you want to increase your rev limit.

Thanks, I was a little wired after finding out that I had another 30 years to live.
- For Headgaskets, what is the normal bore of the 7mgte? couldn't find that tidbit in my random searches between supras and penguin sex acts.
- Is there a way to prep the block without pulling the engine, cause that outta my range

then dont go mhg. mill the head, clean the old gasket off the block and put in a stock hg with arp's and troque them dowm good. i'm telling you this because that is what i wish i had done, i was in the same situation. needed a hg but didnt have the money to pull the motor and mill the block, so i milled the head and cleaned the block and put in a mhg. now i have it hanging over my head cuz i dont know if my block is as flat as it is sposed to be. seems to have sealed up, have never needed to add coolant, no milkshake, but why chance it? the stock hg proporly torqued is fine unless you want to run a whole lotta power. and if you wanted 600 hp your price range would have to include the funds to mill the block. just ask Grim, hes running something like 18psi on a stock hg torqued to 100ft/lbs, Grim correct me if i am wrong.

well i just searched and found a thread titled "well, i just found the limit of the stock headgasket". that will give you and idea of what it takes to blow the stocker. and if your not planing on running 20 psi then i suggest avoiding the mhg unless you mill the block.

Dude, you're funny as hell. Calf implants. :D

Composite gaskets are good for plenty of power. I am moving to an HKS gasket now, but I'll still suggest composite for most of the folks here, especially if they are planning on less than 400rwhp.

Wow, a shade tree mechanic I am not. In the process of trying to get to my headgasket I have learned. Don't play with the neighbors white dog after touching the 7MGTE, That 80's Japanese engineers have earned a special place in my heart-burn, and that it is a good idea to get #1 cyl to top dead center before you start a catastrophe like this. How does ones get to the head bolts by chance? I was thinking plasma torch. AND there's gotta be an easier way of taking apar the intake area. ANyone? please!

i find an oxy-acetelyene torch is better for getting to the head bolts. cheaper

get the engine to tdc, take the valve covers off, stick your alen socket down in there and turn. i think it's an 8mm alen. people usually have trouble clearing the cams when they try to tighten the nuts on the new studs. for that you have to use a 3/8 drive deep socket, 1/2 is too big to fit. and you might neet to turn the cams one or two degrees in order to snake the socket by. the intake was a pain when i did it. i just labeled and disconected everything attached to it and started in on the bolts. i needed a mirror too see them and slim hands to reach down there. i took the plenum off but left the lower half of the runners in the car because i didnt feel like undoing the wirering harness which runs through the runners. do you have a TSRM? you can also get an online vershion through this site. good luck.

I am still waiting for someone to help with the BORE question. What is standard bore for a 7mgte?? Also I am in your same possition. I need to replace my head gasket and I am shit out of money. Do I really need a metal one or will I be fine with a cheaper gasket?? What kinda and how much should I spend?? ARP head bolts?? How long does the process take( to change the HG??). What all needs to be done when changing a HG, or what should be done while changing a HG? :1zhelp: I wont be going over 400hp and I just want to get my car running. Any help would be good. Oh and sorry for posting in your thread. :icon_bigg

Thanks
-GREG
