So I just bought an 88 N/A from out of state with plans of a 2JZ swap sometime in the future. Im driving home and about 60 miles from the dealer I hear a buzzing noise comming from the dash on the passenger side. At that time I look at all of my gauges and hear a clunking sound. I look in my rearview and see something black and about the size of my fist fly out from underneath the car.

At that moment I didn't know if I had ran something over or if something had fallen off of the car, but I did notice that the coolant temp gauge started flickering like crazy. It wouldn't go past normal operationg temp, but it would go up to it and back down at random times, like a shorted wire or something. I pulled over, inspected the vehicle, and found nothing wrong. No fluid pissing anywhere, no leaks, and the car was running fine.

I got back on the road with the temp gauge still flickering and about 10 miles later the gauge started flickering toward the hotter side. Then just like that it spiked to red. I immediatly pulled the car into a rest area only to find that when I stopped, there was steam comming up from under the hood. I popped the hood and noticed the steam comming from the firewall/back of the engine.

I called the dealer and they suggested that it could be a blown heater core, but I never noticed steam comming up from under the dash or a wet PS floorboard!!!

We checked all of the hoses and found 1 small 4in "L" shaped hose to be torn. The hose was in the back of the engine and ran from the block to the head. 1 hr later we replaced the hose and started her up. she started right up and it took her about 5-7min to warm up. She was running fine and the only coolant that I could smell was the burnoff from the block. I closed the hood and got in. As soon as I started driving the temp gauge spiked all the way up in the red and I stopped. I popped the hood again and this time the steam looked like it was comming from the center of the engine, around the intake plenum!

After that the car would crank but not start. I left it at a gas station and drove 4 hours home with a friend. Today I called the dealer and to make a long story short the said that they would offer to pay and see what the problem is but not give me my money back. The mechanic that got to the vehicle said that it started right up with no problems. They have yet to find the issue.

So I don't get what the problem could be. There was never any signs of a blown head gasket! The exhaust never poured out white smoke!!! The car started right up after sitting for a day. it will idle all day long, but as soon as you start driving the temp gauge goes crazy!!!

Any help would be appreciated!!!

almost sounds like you had a blockage in the cooling system and pressure killed the weakest point...once you fixed the torn hose in the back, the next weak spot got hit. I could be wrong, but thats my thought on it.

is there coolant in your oil? Make sure they do a leak down test on the motor. If it is a head gasket make sure they use the proper head gasket, new head bolts (or ARP studs) and they torque them down to 72ft/lbs. The factory manual calls out 58ft/lbs which is incorrect.
Sounds to me like you had a blockage which caused your rear hose to blow which inturn overheated your motor and caused the head gasket to let go.
The item you saw fly out of your car could have been a charcoal'd rodent.

Check your coolant hoses that go to the TB. There is also a rubber cap under the exhaust manifold, #6 cyl., that has a habit of blowing.

CRE once told me to pull the plugs. with them off, try and look top of the pistons, if they are clean, its likely its a BHG. steam can clean the carbon off the CC. and with the pistons off, it wouldnt be too bad to do a leakdown test sinse the plugs are out.

That temp fluctuation is a sign that there's air in your coolant - due to the BHG leaking exhaust into the coolant passages.
NAPA has a test kit for exhaust products in the coolant. If there's oil in the coolant u don't need the kit......
Make the dealer PROVE to you that they didn't sell u a car w/ a BHG!!

Having worked in the stealership before, get your money back right now. Don't fall for any ploys they try (and they will try). Just get your money back, all of it, and go somewhere else. Even if they offer to repair it they WILL do a half assed job.

All of tha sudden I feel like I was just butt raped!!!

The mechanic called back and said either a BHG and/or cracked head!!!!!

F#%**# used car dealer!!!

What rights do I have? i already called a lemon Law lawyer and they said tough shit because it's an 88!!! I signed a "NO Warranty, As IS" paper!!!

Looks to me like I'm stuck unless they want to do the right tinng. It doesn't bother me 100% because I was planning on doing a 2J swap anyway, but the fact that I just spent $2K on a car that doesn't run pisses me off!!! Not to mention that I will have to wait around 5 months to do the swap!

Dealership :bigun2:

They knew the car was fubar when they sold it to you. Tell them you want your money back and don't back off. If they don't, call the local news stations they will eat it up and at the very least you will kill their sales as revenge. (local did that, it works quite well!)

Good Luck. The dealer doesn't have to do anything as long as you signed that paper. Sorry man. I've seen a lot worse come off of car lots, and there's really not much you can do about it. Rent a car dolly from U-Haul and tow it home.

I doubt you cracked the head, but it's definitely warped. If you decide to fix it, replace the coolant hoses(all of them), and save yourself some headaches down the road.

the mechanic did a block test and said that there is likely a pin sized hole in the head gasket! The car starts up fine and idels great. The head is burning a small amount oc coolant until it runs out then it overheats!

The mechanic told me to get some Blue Devil, anyone heard of it?

It's a high dollar block and head sealer that may or may not work. A Ban-aid approach to open heart surgery.

It is a band-aid for sure. When a Supra gets a BHG you have 2 choices. Fix it correctly or junk it. Fixing it correctly means removing and having the head resurfaced, replacing the head gasget, new head bolts (or ARP studs) and torquing the head down to 73ft/lbs and retorquing after 5 head cycles. While you are at it.. change the water pump too.
Blue Devil will get you home and it may even seal the "pin hole" for a week or 2. Thats about it. It may have started out as a pin hole but since you overheated it its worse now and the head is probably warped.

Bottom line.. get your money back. You are entitled to it regardless of what you signed. Tell the business owner that you are going to contact an attorney and the newspaper. Word of mouth and reputation is everything to a shop like that. Believe me.. if you put the pressure on correctly and as civil as possible they will refund your money.

LOL, they told me to go F myself as soon as I brought up the BBB, attorney general, news and everyone I know! So I am going to F them!!

Bottom line is that I like the car and still plan on doing the sewap. The body is the cleanest that I have seen for an 88. I just never expected to pay $2K for a car that doesn't run!!! I could have picked up the non running version for $800!!!
