i did all the research i can do but just out of curiousity i want straight forward answers for my situation. Basically i just finished my 1jz swap in a s14 and my car is overheating. At this point i know its the headgasket. When i run it for about 5 minutes my oil cooler hoses would start leaking coolant(im going to replace those clamps and hopefully that resolves my overheating problem). Also When i took off the rad cap a shit load of coolant came out. BUT the coolant was like brown??? A buddy of mine told me it could just be exhaust gases mixing with my coolant. I do have a little bit of milk shake on my oil cap on the valve cover but not on my dipstick. I will be changing my oil this week to make sure that im good on that. Let me know what you guys think.

id say thats a bhg then

my oil cooler hoses would start leaking coolant
fixing the clamps surely will not help the fact that coolant is in a hose that is supposed to just have oil in it

plus the milkshake under the oil cap and exhaust gases coming from the radiator, i would say a bhg is most definite even if its a rare thing for a 1j

coolant is in fact suppose to be in those hoses...i have arrows pointing to it

The oil cooler does have coolent lines but that doesnt negate you having milky oil on your valve cover cap. You need to do a compression test on all cylinders.

ohh i didn't know that, but the reason that may have started leaking is because of the added pressure in the system from the exhaust gasses and the coolant getting burned off allowing the coolant to boil, or they were leaking and you didn't know which from the loss of coolant let your engine overheat and bhg

but do a compression test like csnow said to be 100% sure

Yea im gonna do a compression test when i get it down to my shop. I did a compression test on this motor when i first got it and got 175 across the board. I dont get why it would get fucked up now you know what im sayin.

My freind was telling me that its just a little moisture in the crankcase. Another buddy of mine has little milkshake(when i say little i mean really tiny specs) in his motor with an apexi headgasket but has good compression and daily drives it everyday

I've had milky sludge on my oil cap with no BHG, just condensation (very little though). I'd do a block test with the coolant and check for combustion gasses in the coolant.

Brown coolant probably means that the car was ran or sat with pure water in the block and rust has formed in the coolant passages. It may have blocked some if its that bad. I'd recommend taking the head off and cleaning it all out either way, even if it isn't a bhg.

im gonna have to replace the headgasket since im using the car for high revving anyways so im gonna get all that cleaned up. I didnt flush the system out so Im gonna do that sometime this week to see if i overheat again. I have very little sludge on the oil cap so i dont think its that serious. I dont have any on the dipstick but it doesnt hurt to check it out. Either way im gonna change the headgasket. While thats off i might as well change the valve seals and resurface my head and maybe even the block.

First questions I would ask are, where did you get the engine from, what was done to it before you got it, and what did you do after you got it?

I bought it from JDM engined epot from Kearny. We did the compression test over there and it was 175 across the board. I also been going there for years and never bought a bad motor. I mean i dont mind changing the headgasket. It is better for my motor in the long run

Didnt u just get finshed with the swap too?

Yea i did just finish the swap. Like i said to GrimJack i dont mind changing out the headgasket so my motor last longer.

Did you happen to check the thermostat? Start the engine and feel both hoses, if one is hot to the touch and the other is not luke warm while the temp. is climbing then it is more than most likely the thermostat. Also like Tissimo said do a block test. The kit is around 60 bucks from NAPA and it's a life saver. There might also be rust blocking a passage somewhere in the cooling system. Just a few suggestions before tearing into a head gasket.

Yea thermostat is opening. I let it fully warm up the last time i drove it and both hoses were the same temp. Im gonna flush out the system sometime this week or next week to see if something is blocked. Like i said either way im changin the headgasket since im drifting.
