My 88 non turbo supra overheated and now it taps loudly. A mechanic told me it's probably the main bearings. I sure hope he's wrong. I have to pull the block out to replace the main bearings, right? I have the head pulled off and I'm hoping I can just get off easy back replacing possible bad valves.
Is there a way to check if the main bearings are bad or going bad with the head off? If anyone has any pointers, I would appreciate it.

From what I've read on this site in the past, it sounds like you have rod knock, which totally sucks. Do a search on this forum for info on rod knock, there have been many posts in the past on the subject. Where at in georgia are you?

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm in Rincon, 10 minutes from Savannah. Yep, rod knock does suck, I'm not sure if I still want to keep the car if I have to deal with the block. The 7m blocks are alluminum? And if so, is bearing problems common?

I don't think its a common problem, but I know that a few people on here have dealt with it. Have you ever run the car low on oil? I know that alot of people, myself included, check the oil before even starting the car.

^^ lol so funny, as far as the overheat. I bet money either the overheat caused a BHG which in turn caused water to get into the oil and eat away at those bearings. There are a few articles on here posted by supracentral about how water and oil do not mix well.

drain your oil and run a magnet through the oil and see what you find. or pull the motor and take the oil pan off.
Its honestly easier to pull the motor then it is to pull the head lol..
