over heating sometime

i just got my 88 MKIII turbo AUTO...i drove it on the freeway(approx 5miles) from where i bought it and it ran fine when i toook my exit and slowed down..the temperature started to rise....i pulled over and noticed the fan closer to the engine wasnt moving at all and its a custom ELECTRIC fan NOT MECHANIcal coming from the engine....this is something some one put it...(its stock size tho)......the only fan that was moving was closer to the intercooler but its a TINY little fan.....COULD THIS BE THE PROBLEM?????? the fan also has a switch in the inside to turn on and off..i dunno but it wont turn on when the light is lit or when its off....somtin is rong.....any body now what to do????? also sometimes....theres steam or maybe burning oil coming from the left side of where the sparkplug wires are....any body now if this is HG thing or just VALVE COVER SEAL?????

Yes, that is a problem! DON"T DRIVE THE CAR W/OUT THE FAN!!! Put the mechanical belt-driven stock fan back on. The electric ones don't work as well.

As for the vapor...is it steam or oil? Does it smell like burning oil? Check your turbo coolant lines, and replace valve cover gaskets!

johnathon.....for the vapor i think it might be burning oil but its a combination of steam too....ya my dad told me to change the valve cover gasket...is that a BIG job??? or can it be done reaaly simple??....please attach link from TSRM
